I was deeply saddened by the result, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vaticans secretary of state, said at a conference in Rome on Tuesday night. The church must take account of this reality, but in the sense that it must strengthen its commitment to evangelisation. I think that you cannot just talk of a defeat for Christian principles, but of a defeat for humanity.
It was a far more critical response than the circumspect reaction offered by archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin, who said: It is very clear that if this referendum is an affirmation of the views of young people [then the church needs] a reality check.
Ireland became the first country to legalise gay marriage by popular vote after a referendum found that 62% of voters were in favour of changing the constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

This will, however, give us a chance to see whether he's ready to walk the walk.

(6,409 posts)Tolerance and inclusion are bad for humanity. For the good of humanity, we must keep people ignorant, divided against each other, so they will turn to Jesus for answers. Then we'll tell them not to worry about it, to pray fervently, attend church regularly, and tithe faithfully. Especially that tithing part.

(45,319 posts)Tony Perkins of FRC, Francis, Rick Warren, the head of NOM, the Heritage Foundation were all there. Read the article if you have a strong stomach. People keep saying Francis is a progressive, but he invites Tony Perkins and NOM. It's a bit galling.

(45,319 posts)they don't define such things for me. The Pope is a very conservative activist, he teaches dogmas that cause harm and in my view some rich fucker muttering about the poor while also telling them not to use birth control or even condoms to prevent disease transmission is not muttering about the poor for any righteous reason, but to subject the poor to his deadly toxic bullshit. His own 'savior' told him to sell everything and give it to the poor, the Church is dripping in obscene wealth. He does not practice his own stated faith.
I could point out that the conference in November was not about poverty, climate change, nothing was said about the homeless or the sick. The priority of the Vatican and the global faith community is seen in their actions.

On social issues, they're losing the West. And they know it.
They'll scream the entire way down. But in the end, they will surrender.

(45,319 posts)that the Vatican is a country and Francis a head of State. If he's not that, then he should not be addressing our Congress. If he is that, his Sec of State is not 'one old cardinal among many'. Is John Kerry just one old politician among many? Of course not.

(108,977 posts)are considered leaders, but they don't have to be heads of state. It's up to Congress who they decide to invite.
And, yes, John Kerry is just one old politician among many. So is Hillary. So is Bernie. They all speak for themselves, like the Cardinals.
People in the media and people like you assume that the "real Catholics" are the ones who look to the hierarchy for direction. Many actual Catholics, however, have a very different view of the matter. They believe that Catholicism originates among the laity.
I know that's frustrating for people who want to put Catholics in boxes, whether the people are members of the hierarchy, the media, or DUers.
