We can play this stupid game until election day, but suggesting that either Clinton or Sanders don't care about addressing issues that are important to African Americans and other minorities is absurd.
This is an area where I believe both candidates are actually good. That Bernie comes from Vermont or that Hillary chose to settle in Chappaqua has no bearing on that.
And to be clear: The op title is mocking the bullshit. It doesn't reflect on HRC's positions on these issues anymore than being from Vermont reflects on Bernie's.

Just saying.
Ask the Hillary Group how thick a skin is necessary to get thru this election.
Can't just make the crap slinging "please go away", if it gets too ugly for ya.
What goes around, or something like that.
Glad some here can actually agree that these two outstanding Dem candidates are worth fighting for.

Chappaqua is actually divided into two townships. the one where the Clintons reside is virtually all white. Been there many, many times.

(30,481 posts)These are real lives. Lives that are being taken by gang violence, police brutality, and poverty. Not one bit of it is a game and people have every right to criticize/comment on the issue with respect to individual candidates. I believe Sanders and Hillary to also be good on this issue. That doesn't mean they aren't to be questioned, even in a manner in which you disapprove. Sanders has no safe haven place in this election. If his optics were poor, now is the time to address them.

(59,503 posts)An alternative version is that he - like Dean - announced in his home town. Not to mention one REAL piece of his resume was his job as mayor of Burlington. In fact, the very park he held it at was one he fought to create. Had he lost the race to become mayor, it is very possible that that park would not have existed. Instead expensive high rise condominiums would have been built there -- rather than several blocks up the hill. So, instead of two expansive parks that both have lovely views of the lake, Burlington would have one, perfectly nice green park, surrounded on both sides by high rises.
This may not seem like much, but it makes a difference. More important he helped create an open government and things like affordable housing.
Bad optics would be if what was shown was in poor taste or maybe suggested privilege or a sense of entitlement. This was Bernie returning the city that he has made home for 40 plus years - and a city he was mayor of. Not to mention, the place was a spectacular PUBLIC PARK that anyone could enjoy. Further there were no tickets to the event, anyone could walk in and be a part of it. The event did tell who Bernie was -- and only a very jaundiced eye would see this as signalling lack of concern for minorities.
One thing that might be good before simply assuming that Clinton is far preferred by African Americans is to let the process go further. Obviously if Clinton gets the lion's share of African Americans in the primary, that goes a long way to winning - especially as she is leading on ANY segment that has been polled. I really don't get why some here feel a need to attack Sanders on where he had his kick off event. I also resent that Burlington, a city that IS a refugee resettlement center is being slammed. The Burlington school district has people with 40 plus different first languages. IIt is not unusual to see Somalis in long colorful dresses and veils, Nepali immigrants or people from many many countries.

(30,481 posts)He is asking us to look. Please get that. He is asking us. Sanders is running for President, not hometown hero. He already has that one locked up. I have not slammed Sanders. I have not slammed Burlington. In any way at all.

(59,503 posts)Not to mention, this brings back all the comments - vintage 2003 - 2006, that anyone from the Northeast can't win the Presidency.
You absolutely missed my point - that Bernie was able to transform a city in many good ways as mayor. That alone would not be a complete case for President, but everyone runs on their accomplishments. Obviously, Bernie over the course of the campaign will argue both his vision and his House and Senate accomplishments - as well as his accomplishments in Burlington.
I am old enough to remember that both Carter and Clinton ran on what they did as governors. I doubt you asked then why he announced in Little Rock, the capitol of a state that was in the bottom 10 on nearly every metric that measures quality of life - including education and health. Yet, it would have been odd for him to announce anywhere else.
Tell me, in what type of place would you have argued that Sanders really chose an exceptional, meaningful spot? Or should he have just taken to twitter (2016) or put out an internet video (as Clinton did in 2008)? I was neither impressed or troubled by either of those HRC means of announcing. Looking back, I guess I can say that she found ways both times to 100% control the message and did not have any real people contact - unless you argue that she spoke to everybody directly via technology.

(30,481 posts)No, I did not.
"Tell me, in what type of place would you have argued that Sanders really chose an exceptional, meaningful spot? "
I have absolutely no problem with the spot he chose.
"Or should he have just taken to twitter (2016) or put out an internet video (as Clinton did in 2008)? "
What does Clinton have to do with this? Once again, I have no problem with his location. I am beginning to think you are replying to the wrong person.
"You absolutely missed my point"
I ignored your point. Big difference. Your point started with an extremely flawed premise. I stopped there. You started of with a flawed premise again with this post.
Because "optics" are a real thing in this case. Bernie Sanders has been active both as a human being and a legislator on civil rights his entire career. He has fought hard for equality for all and recognizes the essential nature of civil and economic opportunity being closely linked and has attempted to assure that for all.
When you speak for the poor, for education, for labor, for equality of opportunity you are speaking for poverty both black and white. Remember that MLK was killed when he went down to support a sanitation strike for workers that were both black and white.
I would put Bernies civil rights record in reality against your "optics" any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
If you really cared about "Optics" you would be trumpeting his record too.

(99,710 posts)It seems most African Americans hold the Clintons in fairly high regard. We will get to test that proposition soon.
I do agree with you about gentrification though...Everybody wants to live in a nice neighborhood, there has to be a better way to achieve that than by making it so expensive that the folks who currently live there have to move out.

(20,450 posts)And yes, many black Americans have been duped by the Clintons--wrongly believing that the Clintons care about issues affecting us and forgetting about actual POLICIES that were implemented by Bill Clinton.
So yes, you are right.
However...
There are many black Americans who are learning more about the Clintons. And many who will not forgive them for their behavior during the Democratic primaries back in 2007-8.
I'm sure that you don't give a shit about how they treated black Americans and that's to be expected. There are many Democrats who don't care; they just want to win and Democrats have always taken the black vote for granted.
But don't be so smug this time around.
Many black voters I've spoken to are not too happy about Hillary Clinton, even if they end up voting for her. It's not because they necessarily like her; it is because the alternative is unthinkable.
Some black voters have told me that while they will not stay home, when they receive the ballot, they will simply skip over her name if she's the nominee and vote the down-ticket.
Others are determined to stay home.
The Clintons are despicable.

(15,715 posts)I have noticed it in the work environment. A lowly technician gets a couple of good advancements, and they move for mixed neighborhoods with a lot of mixed people. Black/White/Latino/Poor/Lower middle and some a little bit more income advantaged and move to where they are surrounded by more affluent people. Naturally usually white, but it doesn't matter as long as they are not "those people" that they used to live around."Those people" do not mean color, just social strata.

The most effective avenue that Reagan took in the conservative effort to deliberately dumb down America was to make it as difficult as possible for teachers to teach students how to read and comprehend what they read.
