~snip~
According to unnamed sources cited by BuzzFeed, U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon had been planning to file a "a much more explicit" charging document, but he withheld further details from the indictment, partly at the request of Hastert's attorneys. It is probably safe to say that most defendants are not accorded such treatment.
There's also the matter of a very bizarre call made to a C-SPAN show last November, when Hastert appeared to discuss the 2014 midterm elections. A caller identifying himself only as Bruce asked, "Remember me from Yorkville?" to which Hastert responded, "Yeah, go ahead." Bruce then laughed and hung up the phone.

(195,566 posts)$3.5 Million is a lot to pay to keep someone quiet. If it is JUST the story you described I would be surprised. It could get really strange.

Just speculation on my part but the $3,500.00 million bucks to "compensate for and conceal" Hastert's unspecified "prior misconduct" clearly paints a picture that Hastert was without question, concerned for this to become public.

That is what I think it is.

(114,460 posts)Pretty sure it must be something so career-ruining it was worth it to him to keep paying. Career-ruining in Republican party is a REALLY high bar. Look at Vitter.

I thought it had something to do with the Yorkville neighborhood on Manhattan's Upper East Side, where Mom lived for many years until she met Republican Stepdad.

(114,460 posts)Weird to realize that this type of thing isn't even a surprise anymore.
The corpmedia's surprise is what I find the most strange. They act as if he was Mr Clean - I recall his attempts to undermine Clinton WH - he should have been tried for treason, imo. There is NOTHING clean about Hastert.

HELL, I KNEW. I used to have to visit the Hill in my work, with reasonable frequency. You make 'friends' with people when you're stuck warming a bench--you chat, you exchange stories, and so forth. It was one way to relieve the boredom--I heard a ton of stuff simply by saying "Oh really? You don't say! Tell me more!"
I heard this rumor a dozen times while I was up that way. There's also the story about Hastert's long term relationship with his chief of staff, and the speculation that his wife was knowledgeable regarding and comfortable with the relationship.
If the right wing wasn't so invested in criminalizing orientation, this probably wouldn't have happened. Had Hastert been permitted to live a normal life, without any muss or fuss, he might not have sought out students while he was a teacher-coach. Too late for that, now, though. It's not the crime at this stage, it's the cover-up.

I can't imagine putting greed and power ahead of personal authenticity.
