I read the Dennis Hastert story wrong....and thought he had sex with a grown man. I stated he spent 3.5 million to cover up he was Gay. My mistake...if I'd have know he abused some kid I'd would have never said that.

(45,251 posts)The OP of this thread references it.
As I understand jberryhill's posts, Hastert is not been indicted for the sexual abuse.

(41,692 posts)He was Gay or Bisexual and it was unbelievable that he would spend 3.5 mill to cover it up.

(3,580 posts)When the story started to unravel it wasn't clear to me when this happened or if it was abuse. My initial reaction was how I feel when most closeted hypocrits are exposed. 1st how much misery have they caused other folks because they were hiding who they are and 2nd how tragic for people who are in fear of who they are that they can't live an honest life, that must be depressing, how can a person be happy?

(81,209 posts)Clue #1: 3.5 MILLION dollars - must have been something pretty bad to require that high a level of pay-out. That's a SHITLOAD of money!
Clue #2: there was that reference to something that happened back when he was a high school wrestling coach. Okay - if it wasn't some sort of molestation or other sexual predatory crime, why would that little detail be brought up - referring specifically to his life BEFORE he went into politics? Why was it important or considered relevant to throw that in? Why would that even be part of the discussion - if it was just a bank-related (or business-related) thing?
Clue #3: if indeed it was that sort of thing, whoever the victim was - is grown now, and while the statute of limitations has knocked it out of bounds by now, something's evidently still up. Does that individual still have an axe to grind?
And of course, the more that seeps out, the more questions we have.

(8,554 posts)that he spent all that money to hang on to his position of political power is particularly repugnant. Yet another vile hypocrite bites the dust.
When they first began talking about that "Bruce" CSPAN phone call, I admit that I'd had similar suspicions as yours. But that was before we heard yesterday's revelations about the 3.5 million. I shudder to even think what it is he's done or, what it was that was worth millions for him to cover up.
