A while back, Bernie Sanders asked about something that, to the modern reader, seems pretty obvious:
The answers are simple and uncontroversial. A lot of men are turned on by rape and enjoy fantasizing about sexual assault; and a lot of commercial publications are fine with using this to sell their product, even if it normalizes rape culture and ultimately threatens the safety of women.
Online publications have long understood this and deliberately try to take advantage of it when promoting their content. SEO editors, for example, will torture their headlines until they can find a way to squeeze in some sexy keywords, even if those keywords are about rape. And not only that, but theyll arrange and re-arrange their headlines so that those eye-and-search-engine-spider-catching keywords show up in the headline as early as possible. So for example, imagine that you are a Vox editor, and you want to publish an article about the point Bernie just made. Do you call your headline Sanders criticizes the commercialization of sexual assault? Or perhaps Sexual assault commercialization criticized by Sanders? Probably the latter but if you really want to rake in the cash, you write something like this:
Where did that first quote come from? The same very essay Sanders is describing the horrific consequences of media rape culture. The normalization of rape is so monstrous and pernicious, Sanders argues, that some women have even internalized it, and have taught themselves to enjoy the very idea of being sexually assaulted. But instead of giving the reader some minimal idea of what the essay is actually about, Vox pulls a sensational quote about what Sanders is criticizing, shuffles it to the front, and belatedly gets around to explaining where the quote even comes from.

I am always careful, but too honest for my own good, to quote things correctly. Which if used in a headline will not be as well, as attractive er flame baity.
What they said about headline writing though is not just internet. This shit goes all the way back to oh actual papers. We used to call them... it's on the tip of my tongue, help me out here... YELLOW JOURNALISM...

(84,711 posts)when I went to view it on the site. I wasn't able to get the full interview just what started off with that headline which was just flame bait to draw eyeballs. Bernie handled it very well with the "50 Shades" comment and Todd backed off.
Disgusting.

(9,086 posts)I think Bernie could have been more clear on what he meant about 50 Shades.
The 1972 essay was apparently intended to be a critique of rape culture and the type of internalized gender stereotypes found in the 50 shades movie. But he was a bit ambiguous in his explanation so of course the Chuck Todd Show or whatever took the worst possible angle and spun it into the whole story.

(62,325 posts)do think we women are brainless and not likely to bother our 'pretty little heads' checking out where Chuckie might have dug this up from.
And since Chuck has ten thousand times LESS credibility the likelihood that women would trust him, was close to nil.
I donated $50.00 to Bernie's campaign in honor of Chuck Todd's failure though valiant effort to do as he was told by his bosses. The donation will be made in June, next week.
They are despicable, the Old Media.
The New Media is what Bernie is using to reach as many people as possible so he can speak for himself, rather than these shameful excuses for journalism

(9,086 posts)I like your OWS signature line.
The big media is not going to help Bernie Sanders anymore than they helped Occupy Wall Street. I don't have a problem with media asking Bernie about his 1972 essay. That is fair. But their presentation of the issue seemed very unfair to me .
You seem to agree and I really appreciate that.

He carried himself quite well replying to questions regarding Hillary, Obama and Bill Clinton. He also responded to this quote quite well.

(7,820 posts)It's poorly written, and there may well be things you would disagree with, but it actually is trying to talk about how our society (one might even say rape culture) and gender stereotypes have poisoned how men and women relate to each other. By no means would I call this porn. The characterization of the media about this is very misleading. I felt the need to read it because I was more than a little bothered by the second hand accounts. As a feminist and a Bernie supporter, I'm glad I did.

This is bad college writing from 1972. Even Bernie says it was bad. He's gone on to do awesome things since then, so I'm not inclined to judge him on some shitty article he wrote for a college rag more than 40 years ago.

Speaking of which, where the fuck are the full set of Abu Ghraib photos? Credible journalists, among them no less than Seymour Hersh, have alleged that some of the footage depicts American soldiers or mercs sodomizing Iraqi children in front of their parents. Hillary voted for that shit, time and time again.
