Be it economic or social?
Is it voting for one particular candidate? Hoping beyond hope they can heal every wound?
or
It is a social justice movement, where people force the change upon politicians by building creating a groundswell for change, that politicians can't ignore if they want to stay in office. Then, in turn they (the politicians) make the changes through acts of legislation?
Let me clue you in, it's not choice # 1. Never has been and never will in this country.
So, everyone, get out there and do the hard work. Join a movement, give some money to those causes, and stop thinking any one politician is going to turn the world upside right.
I am a Hillary supporter, I do think she is our best choice to win a general election. I do think it's important to have a democrat in the WH to stop some RW pipe dreams come true, but if one wants real change, they need to start thinking about option 2 noted above. That is how things are done in this country. If economic justice interests you the most, go and read about the labor movements. They weren't started by politicians, so there is a clue in there.
Civil Right, womens rights, LGBT rights, weren't started by some politician either.
So, people need to wake up and start doing the real work if they want change. Just voting for someone for president (no matter how much I support Hillary) (or how much you support Bernie or Martin), will get the real change we need. It is impossible for anyone person to fix this. There is a way forward and it is through social justice movements, of which economic justice is one prong.

(26,117 posts)Unfairly, it seems like Republican politicians have a much easier time undoing all the good stuff, so we really need to elect Democrats, even if they can't fix things over night.

(16,038 posts)Has had some events leading to the change. We will not ever have change, regardless how many clubs we join, without attention getting voting...a voter mandate...simply electing more of the same will result in more of the same...
I have a hard time with people who talk about change while advocating for more of exactly the same.
I also have a hard time with people deciding who they support in a general election before the campaign has begun, before the choices are known, before the issues are vetted....

(36,220 posts)the change with a vote, unless there is a groundswell to force them (policicians) to do it.
Of course, voting is part of it, but it is the last step, not the first.

(16,038 posts)Change can happen in many ways, the catalyst for change can be many things....it is why I love history...memorable history is about unexpected and even unintended turns of events.
Let a populist candidate or team emerge that take the vast center to win with a 60% mandate and see how quickly your politicians change their tune.
I completely disagree about the vote being last..what we can never get in enough numbers to matter are people joining causes...too much diversity of causes and not enough people in any one to cause change...not even when people took to the streets enmass did we get change in our own party...as far as I can see occupy really affected nothing...same corporate masters, same politicians advocating the same horrible policies....

(15,472 posts)they're decided by the vote, and before that is our last chance to scrutinize them before we give them the wheel, hopefully in an intelligent way . Good word

(154,021 posts)you are correct about social movements. They do not start with a presidential level politician though. They started in the streets and later on were coopted or adopted by first local pols and then national pols.
Joining a campaign is not a social movement.
Oh and current activists despise politicians, be happy, all parties.
