We interrupt your DU experience for a note on Senate procedures.

A vote to "Limit Debate" on a given piece of legislation is essentially a preemptive cloture vote and has the same effect and requirements.

The vote limits debate to a set time period after which an up or down vote occurs.

This gives Senators the ability to allow legislation to move forward while still being able to tell constituents they voted against it.

At this moment, the limited debate motion on the USA PATRIOT Act extension is standing at 76 Yes votes to 17 No votes.

I guarantee that even though the up or down vote is likely to get more than 50 votes, there will not be 60 votes. Many who voted Yes to limited debate will vote against the extension.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled DU.
