(81 posts)To put this in terms that might be important to you, without the support of liberal Christians and institutional support of liberal Christian churches there would be no same sex marriage today. In fact, it is not going to far to state that without the staunch support of the liberal Christians the gays and lesbians would still be - for the most part - hiding in their closets.
Personally, I find it puzzling that some of us are so positively gleeful in their efforts to alienate this proven ally.

I did say there are some good Christians, but the simple fact is most fall FAR short of what they ADVOCATE.
Even the liberal ones.

(16,286 posts)We shit and piss on his name and memory all day everyday.
Even if he did actually exist, we sure as hell dont celebrate him.
By we I mean practically all self identified Christians, there are a few who actually live that life but so few hardly worth mentioning.
I do give credit to the quasi liberal Christians who fight against Gay hate and racists, and there are more than a few of them, I suppose.
I know what John means, and I get it.
I also think Bernie can win.
I think if he actually did win the nomination for the Democratic party, his choice for VP would be very very very important, given his age.
And given he is a white male, etc.
But he can win, no doubt about it.

(13,877 posts)Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him, 2and He began to teach them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
I can't say I follow all of them, but at least I try. But this is Christianity.

(57,936 posts)At least not the King James version.
Here goes:
About the Jewishness:
Matthew 4,
16 "And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17 And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet E-sa-ias. And when he opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
. . . . .
Matthew 6,
(The Beatitudes are stated here more or less elaborately but as stated in the post to which I am responding, but then what is left out so often are these lines which follow the Beatitudes in Matthew 6 and which set out the difficult challenge of a Christian life that is so often ignored by the fundamentalist preachers):
24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
26. Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
27. But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you.
28. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29. And unto them that smiteth thee on one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
30. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
31. And as ye would that men do to you, do ye to them likewise.
32. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love that love them.
33. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do the same.
34. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be children of the Highest; for he is kind to the unthankful and the evil.
36. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.
38. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give unto your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."
Holy Bible, King James Version (set forth in 1611), American Bible Society
And so the Christian message is one of humility, forgiveness and caring for others.
I think that is the message the Bernie Sanders is conveying. We have this one chance to change our nation to one that doesn't just call itself "Christian" in terms of our morality but that maybe just a little bit begins to live as if we were. Of course, we are not a "Christian nation" in the religious sense. We are not a nation with any one religion because religious tolerance is basic to our Constitution and has served us well. But in a moral sense, maybe our nation could move a tiny bit closer to putting into practice what Jesus taught.
Changing our laws so that many of the nonviolent crimes are dealt with outside of prison would be a beginning. Making sure every American has enough to eat and good health care would also mean progress toward living as Jesus taught us. Jesus did not ask the poor for their health insurance papers before healing them. We should all automatically have health insurance and pay for healthcare for all out of our paychecks and other earnings according to our ability.
I cannot understand how people can oppose single payer insurance and claim to be Christian. It baffles me.
Anyway, seems to me that Bernie is more of a Christian than many self-described Christians because I suspect he agrees more with Jesus than do many right-wing Christians.

(13,877 posts)we'll know if he can, in fact, begin to return us to principles that reside in the Torah and the Bible and the Baghavad Gita and the Tao te Ching and the Dhammapada and others.
My Dad used to say, "You can always tell a lot about the inner nature of a person if you watch how they treat people from whom they desire nothing." (or who can give them nothing.) In other words, note the acts they do first then see if the words match. That's how I decided a lot of decisions in my life...jobs, friends, boyfriends, etc.

(68,644 posts)And I'll add a little something here.
We need to seriously look at why we support whom we support: is it because of their policies and record, or because of their race, religion, or sex?
I dare say that one of the candidates is enjoying big numbers because of the desire of supporters to see the first female president elected.
This is not to say that they'd support a GOP female president.
Bit I would submit that for a Democrat they'll give a pass on all kinds of different baggage.

Gender issues are very important but are far from being the only issues, especially today. Bernie's strongly on the same page there, anyway. A feminist does not have to be female.

(68,644 posts)I left a good position because of the sexual harrassment I had to witness my director perpetrating.
I made a move to talk to HR, just asked for a sit down without details but mentioned whom I wanted to discuss and a week later I was informed that my contract would not be renewed and I was to report to a different department.
silverweb
(16,410 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]You'd think HR managers would be much more sensitive, at least to morale and thus productivity. I'd guess that your director was a routine problem, but someone was protecting him - the "good old boys' club" in action again.
I'm out of touch with office culture today because I've worked at home for some time now, but I'm not surprised there's still sexual harassment even in more liberal parts of the country today.
One supervisor where it was particularly bad, said, "I really don't know how you put up with it," but when asked to do something about it, he just shook his head and said, "I can't." No elaboration or rationale offered; just ... "I can't."
Office affairs were common and I wonder now how many were coerced. As a young divorcée with a small child to support, I was considered vulnerable and "fair game," whether I liked it or not.
Sexist pigs will find a way to be sexist pigs no matter where they are. They're nothing but egotistical, hormonal, 15-year-old brats in men's clothing. They might have to be a little more sneaky about it these days, but even that's in doubt.

(13,877 posts)globe will be killed, except for 144,000 CONVERTED Jews...awaiting the Second (not first) Coming of their Messiah. Once all those little "details" are accomplished, Jesus will come and rein on the Temple Mount, which infers that the New Jerusalem will be converted Jews only.
The Christians at that time, however, will be spared as they will go up into the heavens, quite magically, and the sinners will be killed. Some (pre-trib folks) think they Go Up before the Tribulation, others think they will have to endure to test their faith, then go up...the post-trib folks.
For non-Christians it seems a bit foggy, and that would be appropriate, since this all reportedly came from a Dream of the Apostle John.
All of this culminates in Israel, so that's the attraction. They get to go to Heaven then without dying.

(5,179 posts)Now even Republicans nominate Catholic candidates, but we should have progressed enough to elect a Jewish presidential candidate, at least. Socialist is the big hurdle to overcome. Too many in the U.S. equate the ideology that has actually provided most of the programs we revere in this country with some sort of brutal Russian-type program.
