The story was first reported by Sam Richards who put out information under the twitter handle @MinneapoliSam. The 23-year-old independent journalist first published the story of the FBI surveillance program on the website Medium on May 26.
His story featured screen grabs from FlightRadar24.com showing the circular routes the low-flying planes took over not just Minneapolis, but cities including New York, Chicago, Seattle, Phoenix and Dallas.
Richards said his investigation began when his friend noticed the low-flying suspicious flight and showed him the screen grab.
It showed pictures of the plane doing loops around different parts of Minneapolis so we started looking at the tail number, he said.
The plane was registered to a fake company, but Richards was able to track it to a fleet registered to the Department of Justice in Virginia.
After his article was posted, a local aviation buff sent him pictures he took of what he believed was the surveillance plane. An antennae appears to be attached to the planes bottom.

(9,610 posts)I have started noticing low flying millary helicopters circling my area, almost appearing to be on patrol. This is new, it never used to occur.

(25,270 posts)Congress? Where did the money come from to purchase this fleet of airplanes and the equipment used in these planes? Who are the pilots? Are they FBI personnel or are they hired to fly without being told why the are doing what they are doing? Now that this has been exposed - is it continuing?

(19,497 posts)Remember when it was being proposed that journalists be credentialed by the government to afford them protection from government prosecution? I'm sure it wasn't that long ago, perhaps 2013 at the latest.
So many here -- too many here -- defended the notion.
I couldn't help but think of that as I read, "uncovered by...independent citizen journalist"

(36,988 posts)there were two bloggers that traced down the false companies and the flight info. This info was found by citizen journalists during Ferguson and LA affairs and found out it was a national problem and reality not just in those two areas.
AP was not the real journalist on this.

Corporate Owned News should be ashamed for their part in all this.
Important info, Ichingcarpenter. What kind of a country is this when the government treats its citizens as suspects?

(21,675 posts)because it was happening here in sacramento a couple of years ago. a cessna was making a loop (i know, because i was timing it) that went over my house EVERY 15 MINUTES for about three hours! it was loud and annoying the hell out of me so i called the nearest airport and asked them about it AND got the runaround. they told me that yes, there was a plane that was doing this, but no, they could not tell me who/what it was. put two and two together and figured it was probably the gubmint. well, now i know....

(14,881 posts)I live fairly rurally in mid-coast Maine. Last winter we started having planes or helicopters circling overhead for hours, sometimes in the late afternoon, more often after dark.
Really, really wierd. They were high enough in/above clouds that during daylight hours I couldn't see them, could only hear them.
We have a couple tiny airports in the area for the wealthy summer people, but nobody is ever flying that time of year.
They occasionally circle overhead in the summer, presumably looking for pot.
It went on for weeks, and then stopped. I've lived here 12 years -- it has never happened before.
I'd meant to bring it up here, but was too busy struggling through the incredibly stormy winter. And then forgot about it until seeing this thread...
