In 2006 he ran for the Senate on the "Conneticut for Liebermann" party ticket after losing the party's endorsement to Ned Lamont. Much of his support, including money for his campaign, came from Republicans. After he was re-elected with the help of the GOP he caucused with the Dems; this was because he made a deal with the party's leadership that allowed him to keep his seniority and chairmanship of the Governmental Affairs Committee. In return, he agreed to vote with the Dems on all procedural matters. He now works for the conservative think tank, The American Enterprise Institute.
You can call him a Democrat if you want. I won't.
