Memorial begins for Beau Biden

DOVER, Del. — Looking down over former Delaware attorney general Beau Biden's flag-draped casket in the Delaware Senate chambers Thursday, Gov. Jack Markell set the tone for an unprecedented memorial service.

"Beau made Delaware a better place for us all," Markell told a gathering that included Vice President Biden, his wife, Jill, Beau's widow Hallie and children Natalie and Hunter. Beau's brother, Hunter, and sister, Ashley.

Markell was among those who greeted the Bidens outside Legislative Hall, as well as House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf, former Delaware Chief Justice Myron Steele, Attorney General Matt Denn, Senate President Pro Tem Patricia Blevins, Delaware National Guard Adjutant General Frank Vavala.

Video (link to it in the story) is showing the Bidens greeting mourners. Their strength -- especially Joe's -- humbles and amazes me. I never want to know what it is like to bury a child. My heart breaks for them all.

how people hold it together during funerals. Just seeing Joe's hand on his son's coffin is so heartbreaking.
