The GOP is drowning, and Obama has thrown them an anchor

The fact of the matter is that what is driving the shift of opinions is the anti-marriage rhetoric itself.

The upswell of hatred on this issue exposes itself, becomes seen for what it is, and is rejected by fair minded people. We only need to keep the spotlight on it.

Yeah, I was surprised that he now rejects civil unions, too. He was more liberal as Governor. pnwmom May 2012 #6

However, Romney has now rejected the notion of any form of legal recognition of same sex couples.

Even including people who presently disfavor same sex marriage, Americans by far have at least come to a "live and let live" consensus. Sure, there's always some hardcore nuts. But the debate over gay marriage draws out the real foundation of opposition to it, which is "I hate gay people". I don't care where you do your polling, you will not get anything but a shrinking and small minority to agree with that sentiment.

It causes people to have to confront and re-evaluate their own opinion on the subject, to realize that the law has codified a manifestation of this hate, and it needs to be changed.

And it was just dumb of him to take a position more conservative than he needed to -- all he had to do was be more conservative than Obama. Somebody must have given him some bad advice, since he clearly doesn't speak out of personal conviction.

who also happen to approve of same sex marriage policies. They just won't come out against the grain.

Or lose, make their own destiny by the choices they make themselves. A lot of people's deepest thoughts and feelings are going to be brought forth.

Obama spoke with compassion and he encouraged people to do the right thing. Those who choose to do the right thing will be rewarded with more peace.

The hate mongers have chosen to scream and threaten, and that will be on their own heads.

If they don't want to move forward, they will be left behind because they can't change. That's not a survival trait.
