Here are a couple factoids from US History, updated of course. Imagine you were fined 1000 bucks for just saying Merry Christmas? Oh you are not living in the modern US, but the alternate reality where Massachusetts Bay Colony is still around and the Pilgrims penalized the saying of these two words since it was a Pagan holiday... and a papist one to boot.
Of course Congress will be meeting tomorrow, like they did for the first 165 years of the Republic. They were the 7-11 of their time, to quote John Stewart, "yup, we're open."
Gifts on the holiday? You kid me right? Up until the 1880s (with the rise of a strong German immigrant cadre, lights on the tree, and gifts were almost unheard off. Hell, New England (remember those pilgrims) lagged on this for twenty years.
A very loud part of the MAJORITY is acting as if every real minority in the country is hiding behind every bush and forcing them to abandon their traditions. Granted, it is a minority within the MAJORITY, but how exactly can a couple million jews stop Christians form celebrating it? Add to that all the secularists, Muslims, Hindu and other MINORITIES and we are still under the number of evangelicals.
So what is this about?
This is to maintain the utter state of fear and persecution they depend upon.
Oh and yes, last night we had one of these types at the GA... he came to disrupt... and when he started on how they were persecuted because the march went through Horton Plaza and his eyes had to lay eyes on these people, I loudly asked that he be fined 1000 bucks, and then reminded him of all this history. Then I went into the reason for the season IS the Christ, and that means the Sermon in the mount, and clothing his brother, feeding his sister, visiting the sick, and visiting the prisoner... He walked away, I think I shamed him... a secularist jew shaming a bible thumper, there is always a plus in that.

(12,729 posts)Their problem is they thump the Bible and do not let it, especially the Gospels change their hearts. The truth is they are on the wrong side of the war on Christmas. In the words of Inigo Montoya: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

The war on christmas is pure eerzats and propaganda. Hell, even the cops were smiling. That is a feat all on it's own. Two minutes of this, and I am not officially part of the occupation, but those people really get my hackles. They are as real in their feelings as a three dollar bill.

(1,140 posts)with my uber right wing in-laws (is that what you call them, its my sister's husband's parents). They were talking about how the lack of Christmas music a Target was Obama's fault, and then went on to talk about the Christmas card flap (if you could even call it that). They were quoting Sarah Palin word for word.
In the interest of family peace, I bit my tongue, but man, after dinner was over, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I just don't understand why these type of people preach about equality, but then expect special treatment. I guess in their minds, some people are more equal than others, eh?

It is this conjured mental state that allows so many "Christians" to not see how UNChristian many of their actions and attitudes are toward other people.

(24,174 posts)It's just an attempt to drum up some fear in people about losing their Country. As if the fact that some stores say Happy Holidays is any threat to Christmas or the fact that some public spaces no longer have nativities.
The idiots fall for it every year, and yet Christmas still happens every year. How stupid do you have to be to go along with the "Christmas is under attack crowd"?

(154,021 posts)why this behavior has to be made unacceptable outside of Fox news. I mean I don't think I can get Field Marshall O'Reilly to stop this stupidity anytime soon. But as a nation this has to be rejected.

(2,068 posts)Our local right wing newspaper, The Williamsport, PA "Sun-Gazette", had "Season's Greetings" splashed across the entire front page today. Inside was two LTE complaining of the war on X-mas. I LMAO that their own ideological newspaper was engaging in the war on x-mas.

(4,739 posts)They depend on this fear and persecution, hoping for concessions to their religious demands. They will not stop until all is conceded and we are living in a theocracy. The real fun will start when the various theocrats begin fighting among themselves to decide exactly which of the Christian denominations will rule. That is when the real bloodshed would start.

(154,021 posts)self described "victims" of a religious majority who act as if they were a religious minority that is persecuted, and that is not allowed to follow their religion. I come from an actual MINORITY who's seen MILLIONS die over the last 2000 or so last years... for practicing their faith and a few other things. So you could say I do have a very low tolerance for this crap.
Christians, and jews, and fundies and muslims, and yes Atheists, are allowed to practice as they wish in this country.
This is the kind of BS that needs to be called on, since yes... IT IS BS. His big beef, his shopping experience was ruined I tell you, by people being loud, for ten minutes MAX. I KNOW for a fact that nobody forced him to listen, or to stop shopping. Oh and I did not make any of the fact I quoted to him. They are PART OF US HISTORY, albeit NOT WELL KNOWN.
Oh and I forgot, his first thing was not that he was bothered about them... ok, that one I get... it was... "they are attacking the christ and christmas... they are the ones doing it... " and of course the lovely, "SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

(12,482 posts)The most commonly encountered Christogram in English-speaking countries in modern times is the X (or more accurately, Greek letter chi) in the abbreviation Xmas (for "Christmas"
, which represents the first letter of the word Christ.
Xmas" is a common abbreviation of the word "Christmas". It is sometimes pronounced /ˈɛksməs/, but it, and variants such as "Xtemass", originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation /ˈkrɪsməs/. The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for "Mass",[1] while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ".[2]
There is a common misconception that the word Xmas is a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas[3] by taking the "Christ" out of "Christmas".

By the way, merry christmas... or should I say xmas? Or happy holidays?
