when they are voluntary and future baby is healthy, wanted and celebrated.
Oh, and especially cool when the ultrasound is of my first grand-baby (to be)!!
I've been waiting to make my 10,000 post a special one. Well, this is it! A week ago I was looking into IVF for my daughter. This week we find out she is 21 weeks along!!! Crazy.
There is so much joy when a pregnancy is wanted. There is no joy when a pregnancy is unwanted. An unnecessary, forced ultrasound does not magically change that and is not cool in any way.

(111,302 posts)Ultrasounds are cool, but only when necessary. Because of ultrasounds, I didn't need angiograms of my heart and carotids. I could wipe the goo off and go on my merry way instead of needing to have a tube pulled out of my femoral artery, after which I'd need to be on bedrest for hours.
Even transvaginal ultrasounds are cool when they're trying to figure out where a tumor is and what stage it might be.
None of it is cool when it's unnecessary. It adds to cost and the anguish of an already agonizing decision when it's used according to Republican law to shame women out of getting abortions which will save their lives.
Lawmakers, most especially the Republican ones, need to be prevented from attempting to practice medicine. It's like having a grocery clerk take out your gall bladder. The knowledge deficit means you are likely to be killed outright and if you survive, you will be maimed.

(15,682 posts)It shouldn't but it shocks me every time a republican male talks as if he knows something about women's medical needs. When it comes to climate change they proudly declare they aren't scientists so they can then make any stupid claim they want. But when it comes to women they are true authorities. I think they get a thrill just thinking about violating a woman with the transvaginal wand.
Anyway, my daughter will happily have a transvaginal ultrasound next week to get a better look and find out the sex. (She actually called it "the real" ultrasound so I'm assuming transvaginal.) She's still in shock and a little anxious about being so far along without having known and wants to be sure everything is perfect.

(15,682 posts)When my daughter started trying to get pregnant a few years ago I wasn't ready to be a grandma. (Of course, I did not tell her how I felt.) But I wanted to be as supportive as possible when the time came and was afraid I would fail her.
It was just last week when we were talking about IVF that I realized I was ready! And for the first time I actually told her how much I wanted a grand baby. Funny how things work out sometimes.

(8,554 posts)Congratulations to you and your daughter, all of your family!
We've fought against these anti-abortion fanatics for so many years, one obstacle after another they've thrown up, but when almost half of this country insists a woman must first submit to a vaginal probe, an added prohibitive expense that so many women seeking to end a pregnancy can ill afford, it only shows that we must fight like hell even harder.
When I look at the charts showing which states put what outrageous and immoral demands on all of the women who need to simply have an abortion, but were unfortunate enough to be born within the borders of such places, I can only think that they are trying to take us backwards, back to a time that no woman, none of our daughters, should ever have to return to.
I think of your mama and how very happy she would be to hear your wonderful news!
Hugs to you, Control-Z, and much joy!

(15,682 posts)Yes, I think my mom would be thrilled with the news. When my children were born I was sad they didn't have her. She would have loved them so much and taught them things I couldn't. Not to mention the support I would have had. I have felt her absence often through the years.
This probably won't make any sense but somehow it feels like my life will finally have a natural balance and order to it with this baby. Not just getting to be grandma but witnessing and helping my daughter as she becomes a mother. It just feels right. She's going to make a great mom.
Thank you for your thoughtful post. My happiness serves as a reminder of the many women who are not as lucky as my daughter. The current state of our declining reproductive rights keeps me up at night. I wish I had an answer.

(8,554 posts)I think that there are many many of us who would wrap you in the arms of sisterhood, if that could've been possible throughout all of these years.
None of us should ever forget.

(15,682 posts)You probably have no idea how much your words mean to me. So much. So, so much.
(I read your PM. It deserves a far better response than the quick one I could make now in the middle of the night. I will do so tomorrow. I am thrilled for you!!)

(80,708 posts)I agree- I want every baby that comes into the world to be loved, wanted, and healthy.
And every woman should have 100% unequivocal control over her body and whether or not she is pregnant.

(15,682 posts)Forcing unwanted children into the world is not caring about the child, it is hating the woman, and punishing them both.
