I stepped out a few minutes ago, and the string of buttons was lying there for me.
No note.
Just left by someone who knew me well enough to be sure of my appreciation.
I hung it at the door, along with my note

(47,953 posts)My neighbors here are mostly brainwashed repubs. They are nice people by and large, but don't get them started on politics

(81,110 posts)Strikes me that it might be someone who's stuck, at present, being surrounded by Neanderthals. Evidently he or she appreciates the solidarity that's perceived to be coming from you. Seems to me this is an "OMG - I'm NOT alone!!!!"-type of person.

(22,380 posts)all colors, creeds and income levels. If I walk out my front door and keep walking, in about 6 minutes I'm at the front door of Melissa Harris-Perry's house. (she got a job at Wake Forest U - her alma mater here in town)
Or I could stop in between and there is a house so small it is maybe 700 sq feet including kitchen and bath.
I am not alone but they have known my stripes from way back, at the moment I stole this (with permission) off DU, made bumperstickers, and it is on all 3 sides of my car

I make stickers for a living - or let's say - I did. Now I make them for me and for fun and for creative designers like Jackpine

(1,587 posts)The entire time we've lived here, we (my parents and I live next door to each other) have been the only ones who've ever put out any kind of political sign. I'm pretty sure most of the neighbors are backwards pukes, but they haven't gone in for signs.
There is a cute little brick house that has a nice front yard -- lots of flowers and pretty flowering bushes, a lovely sitting area, and so on -- surrounded by a picket fence not far from me. Every election, there would be a repuke candidate sign out by the road. Proud as punch of the Shrub. Lately, the signs have been inside the fence, where you had to be riding higher up than a car to see them. Hmmm.

On the anti-Bush ones Cheney is the Ace of Spades.

(6,699 posts)I'm one of those people who is so disappointed in my country, and especially disappointed in the parts of my country that are so hateful and embarrassing to the rest of the world. There are pockets all around the country that are God-awful. I know "the South" is not a place where they fit into that mold, but it's just that so much depressing crap seems to stem from the South.
It's good to hear stories like this. I need to hear a steady stream of them to twist my impression back around. I really have lost hope in this country. I smirk when I hear the reich wingers bring up the time Michelle Obama said she was proud of her country when they elected her husband as President. There is so little to be proud of any longer. Individuals...yes. The country as a whole?....for what?

(22,380 posts)It's an anniversary for me today. I came to this country as a late teen, came on a coal freighter, and arrived in Norfolk to be a "maid" in a family I knew.
Things have changed massively, it has been a steady slide towards the Uniter not Divider and we have not yet leveled out. But I have hope, it really does spring eternal, and we have be be examples and appreciators of what is good, not whine about what is bad. If it is to be it is up to us. Above all else we must not allow peoplt to think we share their prejudices, and if we hear them we must take a stand.
You are right. We are not number ONE, but we could be, and so we keep slugging away.

As a kid walking along the tracks, I was an avid collector of railroad spikes. They're far behind me now, but I still am drawn to them. Nice arrangement.
