"We do not know how long we've got here," President Obama said.

"We do not know how long we've got here," President Obama said. "We do not know when fate will intervene. We cannot discern God's plan. What we do know is that with every minute that we got, we can live our lives in a way that takes nothing for granted. We can love deeply. We can help people who need help. We can teach our children what matters. And pass on empathy and compassion and selflessness. We can teach them to have broad shoulders. To the Biden family, this sprawling intimate clan, I know that Beau's passing has left a gaping void in the world. ... I will tell you what, Michelle, and I, Sasha and Malia, we've become part of the Biden clan. We are honorary member now. And Biden family rule applies. We are always here for you. We always will be. My word as a Biden. To Joe and Jill, just like everybody else here, Michelle and I thanks God you are in our lives. Taking this ride with you is one of our great pleasures of our lives. Joe, you are my brother. I am grateful everyday that you've got such a big heart and a big soul and those broad shoulders. I could not admire you more."[/i

more from the president:

.....But Beau was a Biden. And he learned early the Biden family rule: If you have to ask for help, it’s too late. It meant you were never alone; you don’t even have to ask, because someone is always there for you when you need them.

It's a good message, all of it straight from heart to heart. It spoke so much of mortality. freshwest Jun 2015 #2

But as I considered the hateful atmosphere in the USA, it was disturbing, almost prophetic. Prior to JFK and MLK, Jr. being taken from us, I didn't hear as many calls for their demise as I now hear and read by those openly calling for Obama's death, as if to wipe his name and all he has sought to do from the face of the Earth.

“From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia... could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years.

No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide.”

~ Abraham Lincoln

And they killed Lincoln, too. Obama spoke eternal words, that transcend our temporary time on Earth, in a tone that I've only heard by MLK, Jr. in his last speech.

There are not many people willing to stick their necks out to be killed, and I predict there will be less with the hatred, pettiness and ignorance I see on display daily online. We are a degraded nation and Obama has been better than we deserved.

Something about America that so few of the best of the best live to a very old age. Jimmy Carter comes to mind, but there aren't many.

are the people who should be reading your post-but alas, they won't. My heart is broken these days and if someone like Barack Obama, with his compassionate nature and dignified demeanor cannot change the course we are on-I have no answer.

Life will go on for this family, but it'll never be the same. Like tragedy shaped Beau, so will it shape his children. This family's a rock, they'll do ok.

I've seen excerpts several times today and have cried each time. Regardless, from what I've seen, it's too beautiful and moving to miss, so I'll be watching it in it's entirety. President Obama knocked it out of the ballpark.
