Barack Obama poised to hike wages for millions

Politico - Monday 6/8/15

The Obama administration is on the verge of possibly doubling the salary levels that would require employers to pay overtime in the most ambitious government intervention on wages in a decade. And it doesn’t need Congress’s permission.

As early as this week, the Labor Department could propose a rule that would raise the current overtime threshold — $23,660 – to as much as $52,000, extending time and a half overtime pay to millions of American workers. The rule has already come under fire from business and Republican opponents who say it will kill jobs and force employers to cut hours for salaried employees.

“The minimum wage they can’t do,” said Bill Samuel, director of legislative affairs for the AFL-CIO. “This is probably the most significant step they can take to raise wages for millions of workers.”

Congressional Republicans are gearing up for a major battle against raising the overtime threshold. The House Education and the Workforce subcommittee will devote much of a scheduled June 10 hearing on federal wage and hour standards to the overtime rule, even if it isn’t yet released. Sen. Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, said the rule—sight unseen—“seems engineered to make it as unappealing as possible to be an employer creating jobs in this country.”

Unpaid overtime is simply wage theft. And if you don't want to pay more, don't make your employees work overtime. Hire on new ones to work regular time to make up the difference.

Why does he wait until the end of his presidency to do this? Why did he not do it when he took the working man's tax cut away or when he extended bush's uber rich tax cut?

I'm just asking. There may be a valid reason for the long wait to act on such an obvious liberal policy.

You would think that a single job hasn't been established since minimum wage began. Yet somehow companies are surviving with all the economic rules thrown at them.

4. Politicususa: Obama Is About To Take Action To Double The Wages Of Millions Of American Workers

Jun 2015

“Millions of workers in the service sector have been victimized for years by the tactic of being labeled a manager, but not receiving commensurate pay for the position. By not paying managers overtime, corporate giants can keep wages artificially low. With a stroke of President Obama’s pen, millions of workers will be paid for the extra hours that they are currently working for free.”

The President’s executive action will apply to all workers who are classified as managers, but are earning under the overtime threshold. The retail and service sectors have been avoiding overtime rules for years by classifying employees as managers to avoid paying them the full compensation that they deserve.

The Obama administration’s interest in updating overtime rules can be traced to November 2013. | AP

Increase money for rich people = more money in offshore accounts = economic hole

Increase money for the working people = more money spent on goods and businesses = economic boost
