The great escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility was hatched in the prison tailor shop while the killers were sewing Metro-North uniforms, sources told the Daily News Monday.
Using power tools that authorities suspect were either sweet-talked out of a female civilian worker or delivered by a contractor working at the prison, Richard Matt and David Sweat managed to pull off the first successful escape from the forbidding prison near the Canadian border.
Investigators are now grilling civilian employees and private contractors working at the prison to see if any of them provided Matt and Sweat with tools, sources said.
One of them is Joyce Mitchell, who works as an industrial training supervisor in the tailoring department.
Investigators are checking whether she had a personal relationship with one of the men, sources said.

(3,813 posts)Usually not to this extent, most often it's looking the other way while the prisoner gets away with something against the rules. These guys have all the time in the world to plan, plot, and observe the staff for weaknesses. Sometimes they charm, sometimes they extort. Prison employees are often not the brightest bulbs, that's why they're working at a prison. And a lot of prisomers are very intelligent. The true criminal mastermind is rare to nonexistent, but a person of above average intelligence with a lot of time on his/her hands (and women prisoners do it too) can come up with some amazingly complex schemes.
