|Washington PostNEW YORK -- John Podesta -- counselor and enforcer to two presidents, longtime Democratic sage and now the chairman of Hillary Rodham Clintons presidential campaign -- stood in line on a Manhattan street corner the other day, waiting to board a bus.
...snip...
Like fellow passengers, who included thrifty senior citizens and college girls in sorority T-shirts, Podesta was paying just $30 to travel to Washington aboard a Vamoose bus. Thats about a third of the cost of the cheapest Amtrak ticket and less than the taxes on a coach seat on a shuttle flight -- and that's the reason the Clinton campaign has decreed that staffers must schlep on the bus.
Its become solidarity to take it, said Podesta, who agreed to let a Washington Post reporter and photographer accompany him on his subway-and-bus commute from New York to Washington last week.
There is plenty of eye-rolling among the staff, nonetheless. Campaign staffers are also using their personal cellphones for work -- no land lines or campaign-issued models -- to save a few bucks.

Spending money on bus tickets and at mom and pop restaurants is good for the economy.

(146,313 posts)I like it. John Podesta could afford to travel otherwise, but why bother?
I think it's a good move, really. A chance to listen to a different group of people, too.

It presents an excellent image. Hillary and Podesta understand the importance of image alone. It can't be understated. This also has to help in building the campaign from the ground. People really love this type of stuff. Podesta is such an interesting and accomplished person. When people know who they rode with they will feel some form of attachment and possible even read about him and his connections. Every rider that feels that then tells a couple of friends the story. These things build support in an exponential manner.

(this article is referenced from the one in the OP)
AMES, Iowa In Phyllis Peterss garage, there is a snow shovel. A nice one: green, shiny, with an ergonomic steel handle. It came from Hillary Rodham Clinton.
snip--
Last time around, Clinton tried to win over Iowans with bloodless logic, touting her résumé and her grinding work ethic. When that fell short, Clintons well-funded campaign unable to buy her love started buying everything else.
An expensive chartered Hill-a-copter. A $95,000 order of deli sandwiches. And 600-odd new snow shovels, some of which still sit, unused, in basements and garages across Iowa.
The idea behind them seemed to be that Clintons own voters might be so old, or so un-enthused, that they wouldnt leave the house if it snowed. And that Clintons own Iowa volunteers if sent on a voter-rescue mission might not be prepared for .?.?. winter. In Iowa.

I'd guess because it's both dated and irrelevant in the here and now, but you illustrate a great point-- any positive move each candidate makes will be countered with dated and petulant irrelevancies until the campaigns are over. More often than not, by those who hold two standards-- one for the candidate they support, and a higher standard for all other candidates.
Good luck with the smilies, though... they work better than literacy for many people.
