Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCan anybody near NYC take a sweet 7yo kitteh who is heartbroken after abandoned by owner?
In a purely selfish act, seven-year-old Tiger was recently surrendered to New York City Animal Care and Control because his owner purchased a new couch.
Tiger had lived with his family since he was only three-months-old and cried with deeply sorrowful meows as his owner walked away and left him sitting on the counter where unwanted pets are surrendered. Even when the attendant warned the woman that Tiger could be euthanized at anytime, she was unmoved.
On the day, Tiger was scheduled to be euthanized, Magnificat Cat Rescue and Rehoming from Bronx, New York City stepped in to save his life. A volunteer tells more of the tragic story:
"You said you got him when he was just three months old, and that he was now seven. You said he was a good cat, well-behaved and affectionate. That he followed you around and kept you company. That he waited at the door for you every night and that he was so happy when you came home from work. You signed the ACC paperwork, which states that a surrendered animal may be euthanized. Then you left him there and walked away, even though he cried."
Although Tiger was rescued, his sad story continues. The organization reports Tiger has recovered from his upper respiratory infection, but he refuses to eat and refuses to drink. Volunteers have been force feeding him to keep him hydrated and alive, however he just continues to stay curled up in a ball and just doesn't want to move.

If I was in NYC - I would go getting him in a heathbeat - I have space - and free space for him - and I love cats - and I have had a few stray cats who if not unwanted by their owners - at least temperary was in my care - and every one of them - even that nasty old male cat I had in the end was able to care for that silly human who picked them up - and took them home...

(8,554 posts)His plight was just too close to home for me. My Joey had done the same exact thing as he's doing...she stopped eating, stopped drinking, stopped moving...just lay on my shirt curled up in a ball and my man could not get her to respond to anything at all. He took her to the vet early on and they couldn't find anything wrong, at all.
I was able to get back home for her, three days before she died, then had to go back to Ohio on the same day we buried her, as there was no one else who could handle my mother's care.
It was the incredible bond that kitty had with me that killed her.

My dogs and cat pretty much trashed the carpet over the years. Of course we did not get rid of them, they are familly. Turns out most of the time it happened it was my fault for not letting them put in time or recognizing they are sick.
We simply replaced the carpet with wood floors which is what we wanted anyway.

"Tiger Tim update for Tuesday night
Well, here is the latest news. It's not good, but there is a ray of hope.
Tiger Tim has fluid around his lungs. Not pneumonia, but a worrisome build up of fluids. Our vet tapped his chest tonight and extracted 50 ml. At least the fluid was not yellow and putrid, which would have pointed towards FIP. The fluid was sent off to a specialized lab and we should know more by tomorrow. But it is definitely not good.
We do have a bit of encouraging news, though. Tiger Tim is in a cage in the same room where the vets work, not in the isolation cages in the basement. All day long there is activity around him, and Tiger Tim is getting more than his fair share of attention from vet techs and receptionists, who stop constantly at his cage to say hello and pet him. It must be doing him good, because he seemed to perk up a bit. Best of all, he actually ate a little on his own!"

(22,913 posts)...and not just in the life of this one cat, but obviously starting there. It is clear how many lives have been touched now by what has happened to this poor loving but abandoned cat. We all live our lives silently horrified by all the cruelty that we would rather not see all around us, but sometimes it breaks through anyway. That's good in a way because otherwise all would be lost, but it still is incredibly painful to face the reality of t. And here it is now, in the form of this sweet loving innocent animal who is literally lost but maybe can still be found.
If you can help save him, or even if you just do your very best whether or not you ultimately can you will be affirming hope that love can emerge out of darkness for everyone who has been touched by the grief this cat is suffering. And from that point forward your act and the love you share will be the culmination of his story, not his sad abandonment.
I live west of Kingston NY and I have had this cat on my mid for a full day now. We already took n a rescue kitty even though we really can't afford paying vet bills for him, but now we somehow will even if our car has to wait for repairs if it comes to it. I wanted to step forward for this cat but I know I simply am not in a position to.
If you can do that your act will lift thousands of hearts starting with that precious little creature, but not ending there.

(5,067 posts)Like smoky says, the rescue can probably work with you. I'm currently doing short fosters like that for my rescue group, when the home won't be ready for a few weeks, but kitteh needs a place to go.
Plants? That would be a case-by-case thing, depending on the plants. Can someone help you get a cat-proof place for them? I don't think Tiger Tim is going to be jumping for awhile. I don't have much specific advice to offer because I gave up on plants way back (like couches and other furniture--the cats won).

Sad to say, whether the owner knew or not, that turned out to be the case. Tiger Tim was diagnosed with a malignancy in his chest that is not treatable. He is in a foster hospice home, and receiving supportive care, and getting lots of love and attention from many people. Last night's report is that he seems comfortable, peaceful, and still interested in his surroundings, but is thought not to have much time left. Home euthanasia will be provided so he does not have to be stressed by being transported.
This makes me so sad I can hardly see to type.
