The Quagmire Known As Afghanistan

As the slow-motion Tet of 2012 continues, more of our soldiers, sailors, marines and zoomies (no disrespect intended) continue to die, and our taxpayer dollars continue to be pissed away.

The Army Times today had a story:

Men in Afghan police garb kill 2 NATO troops

KABUL, Afghanistan — Men wearing Afghan police uniforms shot dead two NATO service members Saturday in southern Afghanistan, authorities said, the latest in a string of attacks on international troops by Afghan security forces or militants disguised as police.

On May 1, 2012 the Army Times reported:

ISAF under-reporting attacks by Afghan allies

WASHINGTON — The military is under-reporting the number of times that Afghan soldiers and police open fire on American and other foreign troops.

I could go on and on, but this Toronto Sun op-ed says it all; read it and weep: http://www.torontosun.com/2012/05/04/obamas-disastrous-war

Afghan soldiers are directly responsible for almost 20% of American deaths since the beginning of 2012.

The US has had to abandon an $80 million dollar embassy in the northwest part of the country because the State department said it was not 'safe'.

The Pakistan supply routes into Afghanistan are still closed which means withdrawal will be around 5 times (500%) more expensive than shipping 'stuff' through Karachi.

The Marjah province, which the Pentagon proudly declared two years ago as 'pacified' appears to be un-pacified again.

Karzai's pissed at Obama for continuing to rain death on Afghan civilians: http://www.navytimes.com/news/2012/05/ap-karzai-airstrikes-could-undermine-us-pact-afghanistan-050812/

A general with the 82nd Airborne Division was relieved of command in Afghanistan and was sent back stateside: http://www.stripes.com/news/army/army-general-removed-from-job-in-afghanistan-1.177036

Then there's this little gem:

Military college course advocated total war on Islam
By Hugh Lessig, hlessig@dailypress.com | 757-247-7821

A military college course taught in Norfolk suggested all-out war against Islam that could include threatening Saudi Arabia with starvation and the nuclear annihilation of the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The course, suspended last month at the Joint Forces Staff College, came into sharper focus this week when class materials were posted online by the Danger Room blog on wired.com.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey condemned the material at a Pentagon press conference Thursday and promised an investigation. The staff college is considered a select institution that trains senior military and civilian leaders for higher-level assignments throughout the U.S. military.

"It was just totally objectionable, against our values and it wasn't academically sound," he said. The student who tipped off military leaders about the course was "absolutely right," he added.

The question I ask myself is: Are there any adults around?

The United States has fucked up pretty much everything in Afghanistan. The Afghan people hate us; Pakistanis hate us; our coalition partners are pulling out earlier than planned, the cost of getting military supplies to Afghanistan has gone through the roof since the Pakistan border was closed, the State Department is afraid to open already built embassies because of 'safety' reasons and the United States is now 'pivoting to the Pacific'. And more Americans continue to die.

I won't even start talking (in this thread) about the shit-toys that are now being delivered to the Pentagon: National Security Cutters delivered with holes in the hull, LCSs back in the shop for cracks in the hulls, the F-22 fiasco (keep in mind the first prototype of this bird flew in 1994) and of course the F-35 woes built by the same guys that built the F-22. Ronnie Raygun's 'Missile Defense Shield' is kinda implemented and kinda somewhat works.

When dubya took over the White house in 2001, the military budget was $302 billion dollars; right now it's at one trillion dollars ($1,000,000,000,000 <- that's a one followed by twelve zeros). The Pentagon is pissing and moaning about sequestration ( which basically means they will lose 10% -that's right, ten fucking percent) of their annual budget.

And yet Obama wants to 'stay the course'.
