O’Malley touts progressive values, experience, results

MOUNT VERNON | Selling himself as a progressive who gets things done, Martin O’Malley engaged in classic Iowa retail politics Thursday afternoon at a Mount Vernon house party.

O’Malley, who later had a campaign rally at Sanctuary Pub in Iowa City, emphasized his experience and record of getting things done as Baltimore mayor and two terms as Maryland governor.

“I am the only candidate in this race with 15 years of elected executive experience.” O’Malley said more than once during a 13-minute stump speech and about 20 minutes of question-and-answer...

“It matters not only for the accomplishment of the task at hand, it matters for restoring the public trust necessary to build the deeper and larger consensus so we can start acting like Americans again,” O’Malley said.

The 52-year-old O’Malley also drew a generational distinction between himself and the “very honorable and good people” – Hillary Clinton, 67, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 73, -- who also are seeking the democratic presidential nomination.

...Martin O'Malley has been speaking out since his announcement before a wonderfully diverse crowd of folks in Baltimore, and in front of a wonderfully diverse group of supporters behind him, about a host of economic and justice issues concerning minorities, immigrants and others in direct and pointed terms. 13. My intent was not to attack the thread, and if that is how it is/was perceived

the fault is mine for not expressing myself more clearly. There was a post about the Bernie Sanders announcement and a number of DU members talked about the absence of non-white people in the picture. Since Iowa, like Vermont, has a tiny non-white population, most crowds will probably be mainly white.

My comment was not about O'Malley.

to "politics as usual". I am not as well informed about O'Malley's positions as those of Senator Sanders, but I will read more and hope for a chance to see more.

It has been my position that apathy among voters who should be Democratic voters is due to a message that does not resonate with and inspire people. If any of the candidates can do that, inspire and motivate, the Democrats should do well on a state and national level.

Again, my intent was not to attack O'Malley or his supporters.

Less than a third of eligible voters turned out in 2014. It was the lowest participation rate in 72 years, when a large portion of voters were fighting a world war. In my opinion, people who don't vote are disengaged from their lives in general (the self-absorbed millionaire, Russel Brand, notwithstanding) and are probably just going through the motions day to day.

I say to people, don't wait for someone to inspire you. Find something you care about. If you don't care about anything, don't ask a politician to care for you.

From my limited reading, in the U.S.S.R. the individual only voted for a representatives to his local soviet. Then the soviet representatives would elect representatives to the next tier, and then those to the next.

Bernie is very likable (so is O'Malley), Bernie is pugnacious (so is O'Malley but he seems more laid back), Bernie speaks in very plain language (O'Malley's message is harder to put into sound bites, and O'Malley hasn't been on the radar for very long so give it time. I think Bernie and O'Malley could be an unbeatable team. Bernie can cut to the chase and O'Malley can talk the details.

I'm not sure why you believe that statement you highlighted represents 'republicon platitudes' when he is referring to his demonstrated ability to bring about real life solutions, which impacted the real lives of actual citizens, with a host of progressive initiatives and legislation on a wide range of issues which have been actively opposed by republicans and conservatives in my state and elsewhere. So, it's not at all about 'platitudes,' but action he's taken, concrete accomplishments to back up his words.

Makes No Sense To Keep 11 Million In Shadow Economy.

Attempting to further capitalize on his immigration record, 2016 Democratic hopeful Martin O'Malley on Wednesday promoted immigration reform as a way to improve wages for all Americans.

"How are you going to get wages to go up if you allow 11 million people to live in a shadow economy?" O'Malley asked at an event sponsored by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

He further said immigration needs to be talked about as a national economic and security priority "not for this group or that group, but for us" as a country.

O'Malley committed to addressing immigration during his time in office if elected, but only would go so far as to say he hoped to make it happen within the first 100 days he is in the Oval Office.

...but the former governor is very specific when he speaks about his agenda and record. I don't think the lack of press reporting or a transcript disproves that. In fact, I think it's a rather specious suggestion that his remarks lacked substance, and I'll be certain to post more of those remarks if they become available.

By the way, I've read plenty of generalized statements from Sen. Sanders, but I wouldn't accuse him of lacking substance in his remarks. I think both candidates are politicians of substance and are working to convey their goals and record as effectively as their forums and events present them that opportunity. If you have seen any of the dozens of posts I've made on the plethora of interviews and Q&As Martin O'Malley has made himself available to since his announcement, you'd find much more substance and detail on issues than you're willing to afford him here.

As for the issue of the presence of minorities, that was raised in the context of the substance and detail of what the candidates are actually saying about issues and concerns related to the black community and those affected by the issues surrounding immigration. For instance, I've heard almost nothing from Sen. Sanders on the issues surrounding immigration, although I look forward to his remarks in the announced upcoming forum before a Latino organization.

I don't regard those concerns as a laughing matter. The issue is not what these reliable and caring Democrats have offered in the past, but what priority and attention they are willing to give those important issues during their campaign; also, how effective they will be in convincing folks who know little about their records that they care enough about the issues that affect their daily lives. That effort needs to come from the campaign trail, not a resume.

In that speech O’Malley went on to draw sharp contrasts between himself and Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Jeb Bush, saying “Recently the C.E.O. of Goldman Sachs let his employees know that he’d be just fine with either Bush or Clinton, I bet he would!” . .

As O’Malley has hit the campaign trail, even before he made his announcement in Baltimore on the 30th of last month, he has been saying the things that we had hoped to hear from Elizabeth Warren. O’Malley is running the campaign that we wanted from Elizabeth Warren.

“We can’t let ourselves become the party of Dodd-Frank-lite,” referring to a Wall Street reform law signed by President Obama back in 2012. He’s also said recently, “If a bank is too big to fail without harming the common good of our nation, then it’s too big and we must break it up before it breaks us.”

And he recently told reporters, while visiting New Hampshire, “I think we need to reinstate Glass-Steagall.” (Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., speaheaded a “21st Century Glass-Steagall Act” in 2013.)

But it isn’t just O’Malley’s announcement speech, Wall Street’s response to it, or the things that he’s saying as he’s on the campaign trail that should draw attention and admiration from progressives, it’s his record as governor.

Bird himself is a frequent participant in Iowa Democratic Party events. He interned with President Obama's 2012 presidential re-election campaign, and was tapped to chauffeur Vice President Joe Biden in October 2014 when he visited Davenport.

'What happened is, we were just asked to be there by Troy,' Bird said Wednesday in a phone interview. 'We were asked to come to a meeting with Troy, the three of us, at the Village Inn.'

48. I was worried about the turnout he would get this time around and couldn't be happier.

They actually had to turn people away at his last event because they were at capacity. People were excited, clapping, and cheering his speech and answers. He took 30 Qs in 30 minutes and one of the reporters there said it was one of his favorite events so far. He spoke in detail on many issues and got really passionate about Baltimore.

O'Malley gets about 1/25th the coverage Sanders gets in the progressive media/mainstream media and about 1/100th the coverage Hillary gets so for him to get packed events this early is thrilling.

I am hoping his events in NH will go well this weekend, but I think Iowa is going to be a better fit for him. Iowa is much more progressive than NH is for Dem presidential politics.

I am hoping he gets back down to Nevada and South Carolina soon as well. That's where I expect he can really challenge Hillary.
