Press:

O’Malley touts progressive values, experience, results

MOUNT VERNON | Selling himself as a progressive who gets things done, Martin O’Malley engaged in classic Iowa retail politics Thursday afternoon at a Mount Vernon house party.

O’Malley, who later had a campaign rally at Sanctuary Pub in Iowa City, emphasized his experience and record of getting things done as Baltimore mayor and two terms as Maryland governor.

“I am the only candidate in this race with 15 years of elected executive experience.” O’Malley said more than once during a 13-minute stump speech and about 20 minutes of question-and-answer...

“It matters not only for the accomplishment of the task at hand, it matters for restoring the public trust necessary to build the deeper and larger consensus so we can start acting like Americans again,” O’Malley said.

The 52-year-old O’Malley also drew a generational distinction between himself and the “very honorable and good people” – Hillary Clinton, 67, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 73, -- who also are seeking the democratic presidential nomination.

I don't think Bernie should be anyone's VP. If he doesn't get the nomination then maybe he can run for Governor. It won't do much for me, but if he can show what could happen for Vermont, maybe other Governors will follow his lead, maybe we can have a ripple effect and in a couple of years things will get better everywhere.

I think you'll find that his support reflects that.

the fault is mine for not expressing myself more clearly. There was a post about the Bernie Sanders announcement and a number of DU members talked about the absence of non-white people in the picture. Since Iowa, like Vermont, has a tiny non-white population, most crowds will probably be mainly white.

My comment was not about O'Malley.

Thu Jun 11, 2015, 09:49 PM

...was the need to both vocalize the support for issues of concern to minorities and immigrants and to demonstrate that support beyond their records, which each of our Democratic candidates can refer back to with pride in their support for these diverse communities and the issues which affect them. All of that is important to elevate in this election season. The criticisms concern what they're willing to prioritize in their rhetoric and commitments in this campaign; not so much about whether they've supported those things in the past.

to "politics as usual". I am not as well informed about O'Malley's positions as those of Senator Sanders, but I will read more and hope for a chance to see more.

It has been my position that apathy among voters who should be Democratic voters is due to a message that does not resonate with and inspire people. If any of the candidates can do that, inspire and motivate, the Democrats should do well on a state and national level.

Again, my intent was not to attack O'Malley or his supporters.

Less than a third of eligible voters turned out in 2014. It was the lowest participation rate in 72 years, when a large portion of voters were fighting a world war. In my opinion, people who don't vote are disengaged from their lives in general (the self-absorbed millionaire, Russel Brand, notwithstanding) and are probably just going through the motions day to day.

I say to people, don't wait for someone to inspire you. Find something you care about. If you don't care about anything, don't ask a politician to care for you.

That of the U.S. representative democratic process. In the U.S. each citizen has a direct vote for a representative in every tier of government in which the voter is a constituent.

From my limited reading, in the U.S.S.R. the individual only voted for a representatives to his local soviet. Then the soviet representatives would elect representatives to the next tier, and then those to the next.

I'm not sure why you believe that statement you highlighted represents 'republicon platitudes' when he is referring to his demonstrated ability to bring about real life solutions, which impacted the real lives of actual citizens, with a host of progressive initiatives and legislation on a wide range of issues which have been actively opposed by republicans and conservatives in my state and elsewhere. So, it's not at all about 'platitudes,' but action he's taken, concrete accomplishments to back up his words.

Just for shits and grins I didn't see any blacks so I google the population mix in Iowa and they're only about 3 percent black so I guess that explains that.

Just saying I'm the guy who will can make changes happen without specifics is what I was getting on about with my comment.

At any rate if he comes out on top I'll gladly vote for him as I don't have anything against him but for now I'm a Bernie guy all the way. Bernie talks in specifics and I like what I hear him say. He doesn't talk in generalities like some politicians do so that is like a soft summer breeze to me, comfortable

Makes No Sense To Keep 11 Million In Shadow Economy.

Attempting to further capitalize on his immigration record, 2016 Democratic hopeful Martin O'Malley on Wednesday promoted immigration reform as a way to improve wages for all Americans.

"How are you going to get wages to go up if you allow 11 million people to live in a shadow economy?" O'Malley asked at an event sponsored by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

He further said immigration needs to be talked about as a national economic and security priority "not for this group or that group, but for us" as a country.

O'Malley committed to addressing immigration during his time in office if elected, but only would go so far as to say he hoped to make it happen within the first 100 days he is in the Oval Office.

Fought for Women and Families

Maryland is ranked #1 in the Nation for Women
Under Governor O’Malley, Maryland was ranked the best state for Women in America. According to the Center For American Progress, “on matters of economics, leadership, and health, women, on average, fared the best in Maryland.” Maryland also ranked #1 percentage of women owned businesses, and #1 for lowest wage gap between genders.

Signed The Maryland Lilly Ledbetter Civil Rights Restoration Act
Governor O’Malley signed the state Lilly Ledbetter Civil Rights Restoration Act, to help women hold their employers accountable for pay discrimination.

Diversified The Court
Governor O’Malley appointed the first woman ever to be Chief Judge of Maryland’s highest court, and he named the first African-American female to serve on the court. That court, the Court of Appeals, now has a female majority for the first time in its history.

Defended Women’s Reproductive Rights
Governor O’Malley earned NARAL’s endorsement in 2010, and was honored by Planned Parenthood for his “his outstanding leadership in protecting and advancing reproductive rights in Maryland.” O’Malley signed the Family Planning Works Act giving 35,000 low-income women access to free pregnancy counseling, contraception, and cancer and STI screenings.

Enacted the Maryland Parental Leave Act
Governor O’Malley signed legislation requiring small businesses to offer six weeks of family leave without the possibility of job loss.

Martin O'Malley supports a $15.00 minimum wage.

xpanded Voting Rights
While other states around the nation push stricter voter ID laws designed to limit people’s ability to exercise the right to vote, Governor O’Malley made it easier to vote in Maryland by expanding early voting and same-day voter registration.

He already did it in Maryland. He instituted early voting, established online voter registration & same-day registration for early voters.

44. unfortunately, I don't have any transcripts
Fri Jun 12, 2015, 12:50 AM
Jun 2015

...but the former governor is very specific when he speaks about his agenda and record. I don't think the lack of press reporting or a transcript disproves that. In fact, I think it's a rather specious suggestion that his remarks lacked substance, and I'll be certain to post more of those remarks if they become available.

By the way, I've read plenty of generalized statements from Sen. Sanders, but I wouldn't accuse him of lacking substance in his remarks. I think both candidates are politicians of substance and are working to convey their goals and record as effectively as their forums and events present them that opportunity. If you have seen any of the dozens of posts I've made on the plethora of interviews and Q&As Martin O'Malley has made himself available to since his announcement, you'd find much more substance and detail on issues than you're willing to afford him here.

As for the issue of the presence of minorities, that was raised in the context of the substance and detail of what the candidates are actually saying about issues and concerns related to the black community and those affected by the issues surrounding immigration. For instance, I've heard almost nothing from Sen. Sanders on the issues surrounding immigration, although I look forward to his remarks in the announced upcoming forum before a Latino organization.

I don't regard those concerns as a laughing matter. The issue is not what these reliable and caring Democrats have offered in the past, but what priority and attention they are willing to give those important issues during their campaign; also, how effective they will be in convincing folks who know little about their records that they care enough about the issues that affect their daily lives. That effort needs to come from the campaign trail, not a resume.

His speech was filled with several statements that would make all of us burst into raucous applause and cheering, saying things like:

“Tell me how it is, that not a single Wall Street CEO was convicted of a crime related to the 2008 economic meltdown. Not a single one.”

“Tell me how it is that you can get pulled over for a broken taillight in our country, but if you wreck the nation’s economy, you are untouchable.”

In that speech O’Malley went on to draw sharp contrasts between himself and Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Jeb Bush, saying “Recently the C.E.O. of Goldman Sachs let his employees know that he’d be just fine with either Bush or Clinton, I bet he would!” . .

As O’Malley has hit the campaign trail, even before he made his announcement in Baltimore on the 30th of last month, he has been saying the things that we had hoped to hear from Elizabeth Warren. O’Malley is running the campaign that we wanted from Elizabeth Warren.

“We can’t let ourselves become the party of Dodd-Frank-lite,” referring to a Wall Street reform law signed by President Obama back in 2012. He’s also said recently, “If a bank is too big to fail without harming the common good of our nation, then it’s too big and we must break it up before it breaks us.”

And he recently told reporters, while visiting New Hampshire, “I think we need to reinstate Glass-Steagall.” (Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., speaheaded a “21st Century Glass-Steagall Act” in 2013.)

But it isn’t just O’Malley’s announcement speech, Wall Street’s response to it, or the things that he’s saying as he’s on the campaign trail that should draw attention and admiration from progressives, it’s his record as governor.

In Marshalltown, the crowd exceeded the square footage, but O'Malley fielded questions from all corners of the room, and even from those sitting on the patio through the window screens.

He hammered on an overarching theme of supporting the middle class through things such as education, increasing the minimum wage, creating affordable housing and supporting mass transit and infrastructure developments, as well as a "sensible rebalancing" of income disparities.

O'Malley acknowledged that's the way things work in Iowa, and said he's looking forward to being part of it.

"I believe that this is what politics is all about," he told reporters. "I believe it's actually the small conversations close to home that make real the idea and the dreams that we have for our country. So this is the only way I know to campaign."

He held question-and-answer sessions at both of the first two stops and took time to field questions and take pictures with attendees one-on-one.

And although O'Malley didn't mention front-runner Hillary Clinton by name, he did try to draw subtle distinctions, casting himself as a newer face with fresh ideas.

"You will see in the arc of (my) service a fearless advancing of progressive goals and progressive values," he said. "And I don't apologize for that. And I believe that that perspective that I bring, which is of a different generation than some of the very honorable and good people who are seeking my party's nomination this year, is a perspective that will speak to where our country's going."

Bird told Daily Mail Online that campaign staffer Troy Price called and asked him and two other young people to meet him Tuesday morning at a restaurant in Davenport, a nearby city.
Price then drove them to the coffee house to meet Clinton after vetting them for about a half-hour.

The three got the lion's share of Mrs. Clinton's time and participated in what breathless news reports described as a 'roundtable'– the first of many in her brief Iowa campaign swing.

Bird himself is a frequent participant in Iowa Democratic Party events. He interned with President Obama's 2012 presidential re-election campaign, and was tapped to chauffeur Vice President Joe Biden in October 2014 when he visited Davenport.

'What happened is, we were just asked to be there by Troy,' Bird said Wednesday in a phone interview. 'We were asked to come to a meeting with Troy, the three of us, at the Village Inn.'
The other two, he confirmed, were University of Iowa College Democrats president Carter Bell and Planned Parenthood of the Heartland employee Sara Sedlacek.

They actually had to turn people away at his last event because they were at capacity. People were excited, clapping, and cheering his speech and answers. He took 30 Qs in 30 minutes and one of the reporters there said it was one of his favorite events so far. He spoke in detail on many issues and got really passionate about Baltimore.

O'Malley gets about 1/25th the coverage Sanders gets in the progressive media/mainstream media and about 1/100th the coverage Hillary gets so for him to get packed events this early is thrilling.

I am hoping his events in NH will go well this weekend, but I think Iowa is going to be a better fit for him. Iowa is much more progressive than NH is for Dem presidential politics.

I am hoping he gets back down to Nevada and South Carolina soon as well. That's where I expect he can really challenge Hillary.

and will continue to do so, in NH, continuing this weekend: http://www.unionleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20150609/NEWS0605/150609041

O'Malley's schedule includes visiting Portsmouth's Market Square Day, a downtown festival that typically attracts 60,000 to 80,000 people throughout the day. The candidate plans to be there at 11 a.m.

Mary and John Rauh host O'Malley at their New Castle home at 12:30 p.m. O'Malley is then scheduled to greet people in downtown Dover at 2:30 p.m., before an event in Manchester at 5 p.m.

That is what I did with this thread, but after the first couple of pictures I knew it had to be you! I know you support O'Malley, and of course you always create the most wonderful photo essays. As soon as I realized I was viewing a terrific photo essay about O'Malley, I figured it must be your work, so I checked--and sure enough, it was another brilliant bigtree photo essay.

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into these photo posts. They are very much appreciated--and not just by me.

...I've had more than a few folks jibe me for these types of posts, but I think the visuals give a better perspective to the flat news reports. Your kind words and other support I've received make this contribution to the forum of mine (I mostly started doing these photo posts during the 2007-2008 election) so much more worthwhile to me.
