Rep. Luis Gutierrez will continue to be investigated by the House Ethics Committee regarding whether he broke House rules by keeping a staffer-turned-lobbyist working and paid by his congressional officeto the tune of more than $590,000 over 10 years, the panel's top leaders said Monday.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez's loan from a developer who contributes to his campaign raises questions about how clout drives the city's zoning system
October 29, 2008|By Robert Becker, Todd Lighty and Dan Mihalopoulos, TRIBUNE REPORTERS and Tribune reporter Jeff Coen contributed to this report.
U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez personally lobbied Mayor Richard Daley to back a controversial multimillion-dollar development for a campaign contributor who had just lent the congressman $200,000 in a real estate deal, a Tribune investigation has found.
Now the congressman's unusual gesture of support is under federal scrutiny as authorities investigate how developers overcame city planners' objections to convert the West Side industrial site into a more profitable residential and commercial development.

and there's more. He lobbied for a huge amount of money from Paulsen to bail out a PR bank, The Banco Popular and failed to disclose his close ties- the bank donated big bucks to him and his wife had worked there in a senior position.

(52,166 posts)which one was a first generation American and which one wasn't, I don't think a whole bunch would say Sanders was the first generation American. I would bet Rep. Gutierrez has been denegrated for his back round way more often than Sanders has. What Gutierrez said was stupid but to argue he has borne less of the downside of being an immigrant than Sanders has is nothing short of absurd.

Opposed to the TPP. Great ideas on immigration reform. Well, damn near across the board excellent progressive. With respect to your first article dated a year ago, where they decided not to open a special investigation, was one ever opened? That was over a year ago.
You have started precedence with your opposition research here that you will not favor in the end. You will now have to in order to be consistent. Sorry about that.

(30,481 posts)I do question your unwavering support and trust of Chairman Michael Conaway and his committee. You still have not answered the question. With respect to your op, did the right winger open a special investigation into the matter?
Here is the head of the committee that the op is using against a good progressive. It is directly stated in the article linked.
Chairman Michael Conaway, R-Texas
https://conaway.house.gov/
Here is a part of his bio
"As a Christian, I believe that God knows us and fills us with life at the moment we are conceived. I am a strong supporter of the right to life and am committed to protecting the lives of all people, especially those unable to protect themselves.
Access to health services for low-income women is an important goal, and it is one that can be realized without supporting a practice that many Americans find morally repugnant. I will continue to support legislation that restricts the federal funding of abortion facilities and organizations that provide abortions."
This is the head of the committee you are using to attack a good progressive. I have seen this before against progressives. The person you are attacking, with the help of a right winger, is excellent on immigration reform and a whole host of progressive issues. Those opposed to progress make it their goal to marginalize such people at all costs. You have gone as far as to give merit to Michael Conway in order to do so. I went no further than the first link in your op. It is a right wing hit job. It is the only way to view it. You are using a committee, headed up by the republicans, to smear a good progressive.
Said article is over a year old. What was the outcome of Mr. Conways investigation?

They need to go down.
They are predators who realized that a big chunk of the traditional Dem base are economically deprived "social/economic" Democrats who put "housing" at the top of their priority list. Also, since 2008, quantitative easing has made construction, development, and speculation a primary driver of the economy - at the expense of tenants and people who need stable/affordable housing. Enter the Development Democrats.
Development Democrats get votes by promising constituents "housing". Then they make money in all sorts of backroom deals with real estate developers, investment funds, people who are trying to raid HUD, construction-related unions, lobbyists for all of the above...and they think they are all winning and savvy because they are making a ton of money and that somehow all their ruinous activities do result in "housing" (though it tends to result in housing for wealthy people - but that's all well and good since they pay higher taxes and fill City coffers anyway). Yes, Development Democrats are all about the American Dream - it's just they have the gall to be redefining that Dream to the white male libertarian wet dream of a supply-and-demand model that proposes to eviscerate all remaining public space and monetize the very air we breathe.
