(As Skinner reaches for his Xanax.)
I've taken a break for 6 months, tried other sites and found out they were just as sucky as this one. Who knew? I'm goin' with the devil I know as opposed to the devil I don't.
So, Bernie Sanders declared. Yay! A REAL Democrat. And he's gaining the Big Mo!
And there's Hillary, hiding in her bunker keeping strangely silent about the TPP (except to say it is the "gold standard" of trade agreements while she was SOS). Such a leader! (Not!)
And for the people who gave me Valentine's hearts in February, thank you, my lovelies!
Hugs and kisses and let the flame wars begin!:

I think of the women in famine stricken Somalia which I wrote about here a few years ago, walking for miles with their children, some pregnant, children dying along the way, mothers too, and I can't help wondering what they would think if someone were to ask them 'what do you think about the use of offensive words'?
Their PLIGHT is and should be not just offensive, but the cause of worldwide OUTRAGE and then ACTION on their behalf.
But alas, none of the permanently offended were interested in that OP. Airc, it sank like a rock. perhaps if I had included a few 'words' at least it might have kicked, though the content would must likely would still have been ignored.

(20,582 posts)I've posted many reports too of women and children around the world in desperate need of help - not a single one of those (who called us rape-apologists, pedophile enablers, MRA apologists, 'women who like to be abused!' - usually over differences discussing a word) ever chimed in. (20,582 posts)Yes, I've seen that mentioned a time or two. Of course the struggles of women in every country are important and I've never seen anyone say otherwise ... I'm just extra aware of the suffering of women and children in every country we've hurt with military interventions, corporate bullying and everything else we've unleashed on people who've done nothing to deserve it. Mostly because they have been hurt SO badly - probably worse than any of us can even imagine, and it's up to us to care and help however we can. I wish I was in a position to join those Feminists who are doing just that.
I'm looking forward to reading your article.

(154,021 posts)to quote the owners.
Those standards are fine with cyberstalking, bullying et al. So banning a few words is rather silly, given those community standards.
Just my opinion.
Anyhow, it is not that we are at a site that actually cares for ahem policy, or actual women's issues, such as police violence, equal pay, the ERA, minimum wage and child care.
Those issues, those OPs sink like rocks. But shitty novels...how many days on fifty shades? DU has a reputation, not a good one, for it's lack of seriousness around the web
So it is what it is.
JTFrog
(14,274 posts)and I'll keep reading about and commenting on policy, actual women's issues, police violence, equal pay, the ERA, minimum wage and child care right here on DemocraticUnderground. DU has a reputation all, right. A reputation for it's shitty community standards when it comes to misogyny and sexism. If one chooses not to participate in the process that guides the community standards and if one throws their hands up in the air and declares defeat because some women here fight against misogyny and sexist language, then the path to a welcoming environment free of bullying and cyberstalking becomes pretty clouded.
Just my opinion.

I could go on. So yes, my view, if I post a word, the site will spend days and multiple OPs.
Now lemme see if the Clinton campaign posted her speech anywhere. I got a procedural, non partisan, story to write. Ergo, not fit for a partisan site.
JTFrog
(14,274 posts)I'm sorry that people didn't respond to your posts. That doesn't mean that the discussions aren't taking place at all. And it certainly doesn't mean that DUer's don't care about women's issues. The reason those threads about sexist language and misogyny get so out of control is because of the absolute freak out that happens here when someone suggests that there are less offensive ways of communicating.

that women's issues sink... I just used those as examples.
It is what it is.
But it is to the point that we just laugh at the church of the eternally insulted. After all, if those are the community standards and what matters... who am I to say? I speak of these issues, just NOT HERE. And that experience is not just mine. Granted, sometimes it is nicer to do it over coffee and nice music.

NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)but I know there are different rules for different boards. Take Yahoo, for example, where almost anything goes. Would you like the rules on that site to apply here at DU? Most of the perpetually offended crew are far too sensitive for any place where they can't throw a tantrum to get a post hidden or a poster banned.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)Yet it seems to me that those who are the least politically liberal and holler the loudest get their way. So if a word offends them (no matter how few they are), look out.
And no one is saying that we want the rules to go away like Yahoo. No one says that. It's important that the rules keep things civil but not to deny speech just because a few people claim that all uses of a word, whether pejorative or not should be censored.

(55,981 posts)it's not about being offended but about power. What sense of power one has to be able to censor those they declare offend them.
Here is my opinion. Words themselves don't hurt a soul. If you read them in a dictionary you don't burn the dictionary. If a child utters the word no one is offended. It's the intent behind the use of the word. There are lots of words that can be used in a pejorative manner that can also be used in a non-pejorative manner. I consider myself liberal and yet blame some liberals for trying too hard not to offend.
Here is an article that I'd like to get your opinion on: https://medium.com/@aristoNYC/social-justice-bullies-the-authoritarianism-of-millennial-social-justice-6bdb5ad3c9d3

(20,582 posts)I haven't read the article yet, but that quote is spot on .... instead of gathering as many like-minded and sympathetic individuals together to fight those things that truly do hurt women, and everyone else, .... purposefully injecting hatred in to almost any conversation that might contain some word that could be found objectionable, only divides and weakens. Authoritarianism isn't acceptable to anyone I know - I don't know how some find that using it is beneficial to any one or any cause.

I've been a feminist since the 1960's and will put up my feminist/activist creds up against ANYONE'S on this board. Anyone. I've walked the walk for over 40 years and this is what I have to say to you -- you're making the rest of us look bad. They're making fun of the tight-asses who proclaim themselves as spokespersons for the entire feminist movement and for the feminists on this board when in reality, you all don't have a fucking clue.
You accuse people willy nilly of misogyny so often that the word has become meaningless and elicits ridicule. YOU did that!
I'm not interested in your inter-nicene spats because this is a discussion board and people have different opinions and they express them. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree but reacting like each and every disagreement with regards to women is a personal affront to you or some Group on DU IS joke-worthy. You know this and you know your temper tantrums are ineffective so one has to question, why do you REALLY do it? I could probably give it a good guess but, seriously, I'm not that interested.
You wanted my opinion? Well, as Dylan once said, "Don't ask me nothin' about nothin', I just might tell you the truth." You just got it.

Madsen is a scary lady when she wants to be.

(29,414 posts)Old English sæ "sheet of water, sea, lake, pool," from Proto-Germanic *saiwaz (cognates: Old Saxon seo, Old Frisian se, Middle Dutch see, Swedish sjö), of unknown origin, outside connections "wholly doubtful" {Buck}. Meaning "large quantity" (of anything) is from c. 1200. Meaning "dark area of the moon's surface" is attested from 1660s (see mare (n.2)).
Germanic languages also use the general Indo-European word (represented by English mere (n.)), but have no firm distinction between "sea" and "lake," either by size, by inland or open, or by salt vs. fresh. This may reflect the Baltic geography where the languages are thought to have originated. The two words are used more or less interchangeably in Germanic, and exist in opposite senses (such as Gothic saiws "lake," marei "sea;" but Dutch zee "sea," meer "lake" . Compare also Old Norse sær "sea," but Danish sø, usually "lake" but "sea" in phrases. German See is "sea" (fem.) or "lake" (masc.). The single Old English word sæ glosses Latin mare, aequor, pontus, pelagus, and marmor.
Phrase sea change "transformation" is attested from 1610, first in Shakespeare ("The Tempest," I.ii). Sea anemone is from 1742; sea legs is from 1712; sea level from 1806; sea urchin from 1590s. At sea in the figurative sense of "perplexed" is attested from 1768, from literal sense of "out of sight of land" (c. 1300).

And this is for your enjoyment and further amusement:
Old English bicce "female dog," probably from Old Norse bikkjuna "female of the dog" (also fox, wolf, and occasionally other beasts), which is of unknown origin. Grimm derives the Old Norse word from Lapp pittja, but OED notes that "the converse is equally possible." As a term of contempt applied to women, it dates from c. 1400; of a man, c. 1500, playfully, in the sense of "dog." Used among male homosexuals from 1930s. In modern (1990s, originally black English) slang, its use with reference to a man is sexually contemptuous, from the "woman" insult.
BITCH. A she dog, or doggess; the most offensive appellation that can be given to an English woman, even more provoking than that of whore. {"Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue," 1811}
Bitch goddess coined 1906 by William James; the original one was success.
bitch (v.)
"to complain," attested at least from 1930, perhaps from the sense in bitchy, perhaps influenced by the verb meaning "to bungle, spoil," which is recorded from 1823. But bitched in this sense seems to echo Middle English bicched "cursed, bad," a general term of opprobrium (as in Chaucer's bicched bones "unlucky dice" , which despite the hesitation of OED, seems to be a derivative of bitch (n.).
bitchy (adj.)
1925, U.S. slang, "sexually provocative;" later (1930s) "spiteful, catty, bad-tempered" (usually of females); from bitch + -y (2). Earlier in reference to male dogs though to look less rough or coarse than usual.
Mr. Ramsay says we would now call the old dogs "bitchy" in face. That is because the Englishmen have gone in for the wrong sort of forefaces in their dogs, beginning with the days when Meersbrook Bristles and his type swept the judges off their feet and whiskers and an exaggerated face were called for in other varieties of terriers besides the wire haired fox. {James Watson, "The Dog Book," New York, 1906}
Related: Bitchily; bitchiness.

Cedar Falls, Iowa (CNN)Hillary Clinton took aim Tuesday at two core components of a massive free trade pact that President Barack Obama is negotiating signaling some agreement with the deal's liberal critics.
The Democratic front-runner in the 2016 presidential race said she wants to see rules included in the Trans-Pacific Partnership that would penalize countries for driving down the value of their currencies in order to give their exports a price advantage in the U.S. market.
And she said she's concerned about a provision that would give "corporations more power to overturn health and environmental and labor rules than consumers have."
"I think that is a problem," Clinton said during a roundtable event in Iowa, when one woman participating in the event asked her about the deal.
It's as close to staking out a clear position on the trade deal that Clinton has come though she left wiggle room Tuesday.

It will be held at New Yorks Roosevelt Islanda none-to-subtle signal that shes aligning herself with FDR, the boldest of Democratic presidents and the one who established the deepest personal connection with voterssomething Clinton has struggled to do throughout her three-decade career. And shell do so with a broad progressive agenda, her advisers told me, studded with policy proposals to be unveiled in greater depth in a series of speeches this summer, starting with an ambitious plan to cut student debt and lower tuition and a program to coax corporations into paying their workers more.

Hillary Clintons campaign is going to sell her as a fighter like no other.

Tough mother. Thats both the theme of Hillary Clintons big speech on Saturday and the emerging theme of her campaign.
Does no one in her campaign have a dictionary?
"coaxing corporations"? COAXING ?!?
Yeah, the masters of the universe heading corporations & financial institutions just need a little sweet talk . . . . Because, you know, when they are battling head-to-head with corporate takeovers, or renegotiating union contracts and the like, all those movers and shakers, members of the One Percent, etc. rely on those 3 credit MBA programs they took titled: How to Coax, or Coaxing 101, or The Role of Coaxing in Corporate Governance, or Turning on the Charm for Fun and Profit.
And golly, what a super strategy for HRC to use when confronting the head of a hostile government, or telling the Joint Chiefs what to do. Not to mention dealing with recalcitrant GOP majorities in the House or Senate.
Here we have an early indicator of the quality of advisor putting together her campaign strategy - addressing the problem of appearing progressive without pissing off or otherwise alarming all those multi-million dollar donors. We'll just use the term "coax". Yeah, that's the ticket!
And furthermore, since the term is defined as gently urging and flattering, cajoling, pleading, etc., it's a gross insult to a woman candidate. Hey, just use those old feminine wiles! What's plan B - bat one's eyes?

(19,755 posts)Way cool that you were there too! My three buddies and I drove my red '65 Pontiac Bonneville convertible down from the Bay Area and we got there the night before and parked about a hundred feet from the main gate. We brought a couple of house speakers with us and wired them into the 8-track and stuck 'em up in the boot with the top down. We began playing music that was was so loud people from all over the parking lot began bringing us tapes to play and offering various forms of consumables as payment. By the time the gates opened up early in the morning, we were well buzzed and ready to enjoy the show
Those white plastic bottles are something I'll never forget. After DP played, it took so long for ELP's stage to get set up that people were getting bored and restless and began tossing the bottles around and it soon turned into a frenzy. We were camped up near the stage, and looking out over the crowd it was like being inside a giant popcorn maker with all of the empty bottles flying around!

I came with my boyfriend at the time, a girlfriend and her boyfriend. We took the freeway to Ontario but by 9:00 that night the freeway was a parking lot. And like you guys, people were passing around consumables because everyone was out of their cars since we weren't going anywhere. We were there for a LONG time. By the time they opened the gates we were fairly close to the gate but ended up about halfway back on the right as you're facing the stage. I seriously don't even remember Deep Purple and only slightly remember Black Sabbath.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Jun 12, 2015, 06:22 PM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: OFFS! The OP survived the jury as did other posts. Just hide the damned thread if it bothers you.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The thread is full of this, starting with the OP. Not a word I would necessarily sanction in other contexts, but this post is directed at her, and the alert is over a word she used herself, so it's hard to see how she could object. Anyone else objecting to the use of "bitch" on principle shouldn't have clicked on this thread to begin with.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Saw this thread earlier, Figured this would happen hide
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Really?
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Given the light-hearted nature of the post and poster using the OP's own language, I'm voting to leave alone.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

It should be noted here that this thread most likely goes against the grain of the conservatives in DU and they have alerted trying desperately to shut down such wicked open-mindedness.

(23,725 posts)... never mind; there is a word that's worse. I cannot tell you what it is, nor express it in a clever poem, anagram, homophone, or even alliteration.
But be warned!
And welcome back, from wherever your odyssey took you.
I might be gone for a few days. See you next arrrrghhhh, no, no, no, Bad Bozo!

(39,909 posts)...because I gotta tell you, that word is probably the 2nd most used word in Australia,
and nobody get their panties in a twist.
I believe it is used frequently in Great Britain too.
If you don't believe me, watch an HBO Special by the Australian Comic, Jim Jefferies.

(23,725 posts)You're trying to get me to utter the word.
But, now I'm curious: What's the FIRST most used word in Australia? Lemme guess: "beer"? (That's a word often spoken by a Kiwi friend, and yes, I've heard that Australia and New Zealand are not actually the same place)

(3,431 posts)the welcome back.
I have two bitches, who are brighter and more
compassionate than many of the human female
species. Well, they are quite often even more
reasonable than I am.
I detest people who pretend that they are "hurt"
by this comparison, because don't seem to appreciate
the value and love of a good bitch.
At any rate, Welcome again, but I have to say as
many before me: Watch for the word controllers as
well as all their supporters. That so called freedom
of expression has become very limited.
Mind you, I try to catch more flies with honey
myself, but love others to do it their own way.

That's what I think it means!
