Pelosi took to the House floor Friday to oppose trade legislation Obama had personally lobbied for on Capitol Hill earlier that day.
We have an opportunity to slow down, Pelosi said. Whatever the deal is with other countries, we want a better deal for Americas workers. Following her speech, House Democrats rejected Obama's trade agenda in overwhelming numbers. Obama spent the weekend lobbying members of his party to switch their votes next week.
At a rally in Iowa, Clinton said that if the president can't come to terms with Pelosi, there should be no deal. "Here's what I think should happen now," Clinton said. "The president should listen to and work with his allies in Congress, starting with Nancy Pelosi, who have expressed their concerns about the impact that a weak agreement would have on our workers, to make sure we get the best, strongest deal possible and if we don't get it, there should be no deal."

(9,688 posts)Then "Hillary to the left of Obama on economics" shows surrogates planting the knife squarely in Obama's back - for "distance".
Those rewriting history have to avoid mention Rubin, Summers, Geithner, and the entire Clinton apparatus working quietly with Jamie Dimon and co. in the background, and even to the fore. Easy for them - they're pros.
From here on it's going to be one big twisted lie. Be prepared, because it's coming to DU first.

(9,688 posts)So at the very last possible minute she broke to the left.
But I don't trust this process: I believe it'll be worked out, behind the scenes, that JUST ENOUGH Dems vote with the Republicans - AGAIN - to get the most right-wing program in history passed. The right-wing has whip control of such important votes. The left-wing whip controls it so just enough cross the floor, every time, EVERY TIME, to pass the right-wing agenda. The left wing has an anti-whip. History proves it so clearly it can't be doubted.
I wish I were wrong, but I can't think of any evidence to support hope - not until the Third-Way is totally ousted. They are right-wing through and through and have no loyalty to anything but the MIC and big corporate/investment-capital money. And they hold the positions of Dem party power - while "the left" and "the progressive caucus" etc are quite literally laughed at.

(57,936 posts)What the TAA proposed as I understand it was to take Medicare money and use it to provide for the TAA, the money to help workers who lose their jobs due to the TPP to retrain and find new jobs.
Taking money from Medicare at this time when the senior population is growing and when so many seniors' retirement funds and pensions were depleted or lost in the 2008 crisis, is just cruel . It's mean and irresponsible.
Here. If you don't believe me.
Explain to me why taxpayers should pay for TAA (Trade Adjustment Assistance) by funding the program through a $700 million cut to Medicare. Medicare is funded by the taxpayers, not the so-called "global" corporations that will be eliminating jobs, along with the payroll taxes that fund Medicare in addition to corporate taxes, if any, that are paid. These corporations should be paying for TAA. After all, the benefits these corporations receive from US trade benefits negotiated on their behalf, plus US tax cuts legislated on their behalf more than compensate them for the cost.
As a displaced worker receiving TAA benefits, my personal experience with the program is that it will not benefit the majority of workers. To apply for educational benefits, you must first search out an occupation that is considered "in demand." (Preferably one that doesn't qualify for an HB1 visa, because it may be "in demand" but it will probably be filled by an imported worker.) After completing a 2 year degree program, you are left with little in the way of job placement support from job services or the trade school. Employers just aren't that interested in an employee with a degree but without experience--and for the 50+ age group, you might as well just forget it. At least in my own area, there is little to no coordination between the TAA program, trade schools, and employers to make effective use of the educational program to put these displaced workers back to work.

http://www.thomhartmann.com/forum/2015/06/why-should-medicare-pay-taa
This was the plan in 2007.
And it still is:
Funding for a federal trade assistance program would come out of Medicare. Workers displaced by free trade agreements receive job training and other support through a program called Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). The current proposed reauthorization of the program would be paid for through cuts to Medicare.
U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) says she doesnt know how many Democrats plan on opposing the idea, but guesses its an unacceptable proposal to many members of her party in Congress.
There were a lot of people who initially were unaware that this was the pay for, Schakowsky said. I think there is definitely a groundswell of opposition to it.
Schakowsky says she supports TAA, and would actually like to see the program expanded. Her opposition is all about the Medicare cuts, including reductions in dialysis payments to people with kidney problems. The cut would supposedly save $250 million over the next 10 years.
Another $700 million in savings would be found by extended sequestration cuts which reduce payments to Medicare providers.

So now we have it. Obama is so desperate for this trade deal that he is willing to take money from the elderly to pay for it. That is not just not nice. It is much, much worse. I will leave the appropriate language for it to your imagination, dear readers.
Chicanery? Is that nice enough?
That the TAA is needed is a confession on the part of the Republicans and their friend Obama that the TPP will yet again deal a blow to the American job market.
In fact, isn't it interesting that as the administration cooks the numbers to make it look like our economic recovery is taking hold (although not enough hold to justify raising interest rates just a wee tad), and then insists we need this job-killing (admitted by the administration with the proposal that the money to fund job retraining etc. be taken from seniors) bill.
Sorry guys.
This is unacceptable. We need to be writing and calling the White House directly.
Cheney has had how many heart operations on the taxpayers' dollars?
What about your operation, your mom's, your grandmother's?
Is the TPP more important than your, your mom's or your grandmother's health?
Please. Enough of this nonsense is enough.
The TPP is a corporate coup and among others working people and seniors are supposed to pay for it. The gall of some politicians.

(8,200 posts)I would like this administration explain this to me. Obama has stated that it had strong job protection, not like the other trade agreements and would protect workers rights and provide us access to foreign markets. Yet we are going to have to defund Medicare to pay for jobs retraining. I supported Obama, but I am really mystified by his pushing this lousy trade agreement that is alienating the powerful labor constituencies of the party. I have, like thousands of others, have written to him several times and only have gotten the same type of crummy response that I get from my senator and House representive. "We appreciate your interest, blah, blah blah ad nauseam".

And it sounds, to me, that she refused to vote count and order her delegation to "get in line." At least not without a "robust highway bill" to sweeten the pot...
That, to me, is genius. Here's the bottom line--the guy in the WH, and I like him just fine, too, FWIW, isn't running for election every couple of years. Nancy's caucus IS. Each one of them knows how their constituents feel about this issue...or they are starting to get a sense of it.
She figures this is going to be an agenda item for a bit, and she wants her peeps to do the best thing for their own survival, not twist arms, make deals, cut bargains, and hope it all shakes out. If deals are going to be cut, she's going to cut them. Stoops to conquer!!

Eleanors38
(18,318 posts)Anyone have that snippet?
None of this surprising. We ARE in a corporate state, and the Democratic Party has become a back-bencher to the GOP in the latter's allegiance to corporate power. ANY views or policies which smack of ANYTHING to the left of Eisenhower will be vigorously opposed by the Party. And since these views will originate with liberal-progressives, they will face constant opposition from the Party "leadership," much more so than the GOP. The Republicans' work is done regarding its packaging of liberals; in fact, it is superfluous in the face of the effective work to isolate and denigrate progressive Democrats by their own Party leadership.
I sometimes wonder that the reason for Obama's candidacy was not based on opposition to Hillary and her policies (there seemed too little to quibble about), but instead was based on the view that she was too vulnerable, even against the usual right wing humdrum of the GOP. Obama's candidacy, however, brought in more of the increasingly disaffected Party progressives than Hillary could, and those progs could be easily and contemptuously dismissed afterwards.
These are tough times. Progressive liberal thought will be opposed vigorously by both parties, and in large measure by MSM. And the atmosphere on the street is militant apathy, and distrust of not only ideology and ideals, but of the very notion anything can be done for the better.

http://inthesetimes.com/article/16196/rightwing_coalition_opposes_tpp_calling_it_obamatrade
The Republicans are moving forward because they are covering each others back. Once they're faced with being held solely responsible by their constituents, in their red districts, for passing "Obamatrade"; they will pause and reflect. Add to that having to vote for another government program that spends money on the unemployed, by taking money from Medicare .... wow, they better hope all the right wing pundits and rabble rousers are paid up in full by the TPP benefactors.
