(45,251 posts)he Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) was a United States labor union known for its support for "social unionism" and progressive political causes. Led by Sidney Hillman for its first thirty years, it helped found the Congress of Industrial Organizations. It merged with the Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA) in 1976 to form the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU), which merged with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union in 1995 to create the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE). UNITE merged in 2004 with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) in 2004 to create a new union known as UNITE HERE. After a bitter internal dispute in 2009, the majority of the UNITE side of the union, along with some of the disgruntled HERE locals left UNITE HERE, and formed a new union named Workers United, Led by former UNITE president Bruce Raynor.

What difference does it make?
Without unions, we probably would not have had OASDI or Medicare, safe working conditions, a forty hour week and so much more.

First, the "runaway shop" ran to Southern right to work states. Eventually, it ran the fuck out of the country--and often got a tax break while it was at it.

(15,480 posts)Look for the union label
when you are buying that coat, dress or blouse.
Remember somewhere our union's sewing,
our wages going to feed the kids, and run the house.
We work hard, but who's complaining?
Thanks to the I.L.G. we're paying our way!
So always look for the union label,
it says we're able to make it in the U.S.A.!

(6,699 posts)I bought an X-large and large for my son. I'm not really an "X-large guy", but I'd buy them big for comfort. I still have my Obama shirt, and I wear it often when I work around the house. Love to chat with my repuKKKe neighbors over the fence with them on...lol. Starts a conversation, often.
Nice shirts. Worth every cent of $15. I'd buy "Made in America" any day! ..and pay any extra for it. I have never understood why we haven't ever had a movement to "buy American" in this country. They can keep importing all the crap from China and Vietnam, but if we, those of us who chose to, would just buy American, we could bring jobs back and maybe even cut back on imports. An idea that has never gotten any traction.

(43,939 posts)When I come across a pair of jeans or a household item made here now I'm so glad. For domestic products I'm willing to pay more, no problem. Almost all the things sold by the Smithsonian are foreign for some time. Bernie helped to make inroads for American made items, it's a start with a long way to go. What a shame.
