In Defiance of Hate

by anonymous, 1987, after the Forsyth County, Ga. Civil Rights marches. I was there.

"My Skin"

My skin, my skin it burns... you

your eyes
your mind
your heart

You rant
You rage
You hate...

me

But my skin, my skin it burns

with life
with joy
with pride

I live
I learn
I love...

me

Your hate will never define me

Your violence will never confine me

I am
I will
I shall be...

...all that is inside me

You are broken

but...

you won't break me

It was written on a piece of paper with a map on one side, directions to Forsyth County from Atlanta. I found it on my walk back to the parking lot after the march. I kept it all these years.

the victims spoke in today. I was in awe of their defiance to let his actions allow hate in their hearts. Strong, amazing people. Thanks for sharing this.
