(17,301 posts)As a viable economic system. It's rather comical that a bunch of seriously lazy white people who had to import others to do their work for them started a war so they could force others to do what they were too lazy to do. And now they hate the people who refused to be their slaves but love the symbol of their failure.

(36,437 posts)It is outright theft of the wealth and labor of black people, and you're kidding yourself to think it was a failure. It built the US, it built the tony suburbs that white people live in to this day, it built to US GDP. If you're rich in America, you're rich because, directly or indirectly, of the labor of enslaved and oppressed African peoples. It's not even a close question.

(17,301 posts)Which is what the Confederated flag really symbolizes is one giant failure by slave owning whites.
The concentration camps, I mean plantations, they set up to torture and force labor from abused people were quite successful for a few very rich Southern whites. The plantations were very similar to the Nazi concentration camps with their forced labor and use of torture. It was not such a good deal for the middle class in the South because they couldn't get a job that the slaves were NOT already doing for free. And the poor whites in the South were used as cannon fodder, jailers and executioners.
And yet these lazy rich white people manage to convince almost half our country that we should hate the people who escaped their Southern concentration camps.

(4,473 posts)I respond that I have known men who fought with honor and distinction for Germany in WWII. Should we fly the Hakenkreuz flag to honor them?
I also respond to those who use the term "War of Northern Aggression" with "No, the proper term is 'War of Southern Treason'".

(52,227 posts)the basic ideological split in the republican party is between those who think the only real mistake hitler made was killing the jews and those who think his only real mistake was invading russia.
in all seriousness, they believe in government authoritarianism and in particular, intervention on behalf of businesses. mussolini would be proud.

(1,615 posts)'them' being the yankees.
time to drop it tho, too many racist connotations.
southerners lie to themselves and say the war wasn't abt slavery. maybe at the beginning.
predictably, everyone with a confederate flag sticker on their bumper is also driving a monster truck and has a couple others abt killing the gay baby whales and libruls. if ur lucky, you can hear their rush limbaugh too.

When has anyone ever made a movie showing what Quantrill's Raiders did to a whole town?
No, instead there are movies like "Birth Of A Nation," "Gone With The Wind," and "Outlaw Josie Wales."
Pro-confederate groups like "League Of The South" and "VDARE" still thrive.

Southern "Pride", in my mind, has always been associated with losers and traitors.
