According to Will Whitson, a reporter in Columbia SC who covers the state capitol... It can't be taken down.
1. He said he didn't think it was even on a pulley, so they probably can't even lower it
2. It requires a vote of the General Assembly
It is protected under the South Carolina Heritage Act of 2000.
The Act prevents the changing of parks, streets, etc without a vote of 2/3 of the state General Assembly
Isn't that special.
Though members of the Assembly did remove their Gadsen Flags off their desks out of respect for Sen. Pinckney

(11,804 posts)I think that visiting the state and reaching out to those people in the state who aren't crazy is a better approach.
But South Carolina has such a history of insanity and cruelty that I can't imagine ever wanting to go there. And I don't understand why anybody else would either; I guess if you grew up there, that's understandable. But it's a mess.

So they had a sizable influx of the uber conservative religious move in there as well

(13,340 posts)...you need to change minds and win elections.... that a decade long project at least. Screw that. Things changed pretty damned quick here in Indiana... all it took was the threat of economic disaster.
The General Assembly, however, can change this in a week. WE need to change their minds FAST.
The time for "hearts and minds" is past. Time for action.

(11,076 posts)....statues and flag poles can come down. Maybe Halliburton could be hired to do the job. I'll drop 'Shooter' a note and see if he can make that happen.

(24,956 posts)Since the damned thing is padlocked, that would work.
Especially if somehow, someway, the drone also caught fire while tangled in the flag
I just think the whole Act is patently absurd
