And communities overall.

The criminals who are preying upon decent people are a scant, marginal fringe but they can bring far more misery than their numbers belie. Yet, the community is separated from the police through mistrust and suspicion on both sides. Keeping the people separated from the authorities only serves the interests of the criminals as it provides them a place to hide as well as gain recruits and confederates. If the police reconnect with those whom they are meant to serve things can only improve. It is their moral obligation as those who bear force in the name of the people.

Who knows, they might leave with a plate if they come with a smile...

It's healing to see this.

I wish we could see more of this. I appreciate the officer (or was he the local police chief) - in the report farther down-thread wherein he said this was what they hoped to show - that not every police officer is bad. I believe that.

I think we might actually have fewer bad incidents between police and the community if we had more of THIS. They should get out on the street, meet people in the community, talk with people in the community, play ball with a random group of young people, dance with people who throw an instant dancing exhibition there on the street or in the park. I would love to see foot patrols where the officer has a dog on a leash - a mutt from the shelter, not a fearsome-looking German shepherd or some such. A DOG. That people could come up and pet and ask about.

Stuff that turns the heat down. That's what we need. NOW.

'Cuz it's gonna be a long hot summer.

I want better police and better relations with the police in my community. I just want our kids safe. If officers engage with the black community, they will themselves feel safer, and then we can feel safer. If the community has officers they can trust, they will have somebody to call if they have information about crimes. People don't tell things they should because they don't trust the police. That has to end or we will keep losing our children to fear and hate. Looking at the video, people would probably feel comfortable calling THAT cop.

Same principle worked for LGBT rights. The more people realized LGBTers were their friends and family, the more acceptance rolled forward.

So it should be with law enforcement. White officers patrolling black communities? They should live in those communities, IMO.

Many municipalities do have those rules, but the boundaries of what constitutes the "community" are just fluid enough to allow white law enforcement to live in white enclaves. It just exacerbates the problem.

We need to start fighting the police unions on residency requirements across the board. You want to have the power in a community you need to take more responsibility in the community, and living there is the first real common sense step.
