Most interesting part of the article:
"LA Weekly astutely points out that the Catholic and married Pacquiao is allegedly involved in an adulterous affair with a Filipino actress."

(5,062 posts)Anyone who says anyone should be put to death deserve all the bad press they can get. I predict once people lash out at him for saying such hateful things he will give one of those "save my ass" apologies and 'regret' saying what he said. He will blame it on being tired or stressed out or something. Still, I hope this guy's career suffers. Saying you disagree is one thing. Telling the world you think a certain group of people need to be put to death IMO does not deserve a second chance. I hope this guy has never worked on a Sunday or touched the skin of a dead pig. Of course, adultery is Ok for these hypocrites!

(73,525 posts)$32 million -- before the PPV earnibngs. Boxing has been a "dying sport" in critics' minds for some time now, but it's hard to think of any other sport in which an athlete can make that much money for an hour's work.
Liberal_in_LA

(73,525 posts)He did get hit in the face with about six jabs.
The issue that seems to concern you is, of course, distinct from either mine, or the one I had responded to. But I'll play. Floyd also had an extensive amateur career, in which he was not paid. More, in a culture where the vast majority of employed people take shit and suffer humiliation from their "bosses," making $32 + million for taking six jabs seems a wise choice.
Floyd had some minor, temporay damage -- a bloody nose -- but suffered absolutely no long-term damage, and he was doing something that he loves, and which he has invested many a year in developing and perfecting his uncanny natural skills.
No one was forced to buy a ticket, or watch the bout. Citizens' tax dollars were not wasted. But the fight surely did stimulate the economy.

(12,310 posts)"the work" when it comes to boxing, so its not really 32 million for one hour of work. I've always thought the training was much harder than the fighting, in fact, the fight itself is sort of a relief.
H2O Man
(73,525 posts)I can use myself as an example: I fought 329 bouts; they averaged 2 to 3 rounds; for each round of actual fights, I sparred at least ten rounds in preparation. So, if I compare getting hit, say 8 times a round, the number from sparring is far, far more than from the actual bouts.
No wonder I have so dang many aches & pains!
Son of Gob
(1,502 posts)IMO, it's dying Man. Too many damn belts, no viable Heavyweight division and outside of Mayweather and Pacquiao there is no star power in the sport. People don't care about it like they used to.
H2O Man
(73,525 posts)too many weight classes, the weakest heavyweight division in history, and far too few fight clubs and gyms. Add the bullshit from promoters and too many managers, and it is definitely a problem.
At the same time, we really are in a golden age of welterweights -- including the junior- and super-welterweight (junior middleweight) divisions. Also, there are some outstanding talents in the lower weights.
One of the big problems is the lack of solid boxing writers in newspapers. They used to be so important in promoting interest in the fights. Few papers have a boxing writer these days. (The biggest regional paper in our area here no longer does; when there are cards, I write the articles, and let a couple guys on the sports staff take credit.)

(1,502 posts)He's never refused a drug test. Mayweather wanted Olympic style testing conducted by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency back in 2009. It was a riduculous request, he was trying duck Pacquiao.
"The Nevada commission is paid by the state to oversee this sort of thing. They're the governing body. The Nevada commission will not inconvenience a fighter by waking him up in the middle of the night. The other guys [USADA] play games. We'll write down the protocols and let the commission go from there."

(73,525 posts)Lots of fighters take the Olympic-type of testing, because steroids et al are a growing problem in the sport.
More: Teddy Atlas of ESPN, widely recognized as the best spokesman for boxing, recently reported on two e-mails from Pacquiao's camp to Mayweather's camp. The first asked how much of a penalty they would ask for Manny failing the test? The second asked if they would agree to keep it quiet, for "the good of the sport"?
Pacquiao does want to fight Floyd. But Bob Arum will not allow the fight to take place. It's as simple as that.
Son of Gob
(1,502 posts)The poster I replied to said Pacquiao refuses to take a drug test. I corrected him. As far as who is ducking whom, that's opinion. Far more people believe Mayweather is ducking Pacquiao than the other way around.
H2O Man
(73,525 posts)(1) "He's never refused a drug test." Simply not true. Manny refused to the Olympic-style testing at what became the end of their negotiations for the first scheduled fight. His refusal was the sole reason the fight did not happen.
(2) "It was a riduclous (sic) request ...." Actually, it is a valid request; hence, each of the opponents he has faced since then has readily agreed to such testing -- as has Mayweather. In fact, more fighters are beginning to ask for -- or demand -- the exact same type of testing. It has, of course, led to a major fight scheduled for this weekend being canceled, when a fighter with a title failed the test.
Only those who believe that breaking the rules is A-okay could be opposed to the single form of testing that is most likely to find the constantly upgraded forms of steriods et al. (And the nation that has the cutting edge in the new cheating technology is the Philippines.)
(3) "Far more people believe Mayweather is ducking Pacquiao than the other way around." Really? What do you base that on? Are you speaking about people with informed opinions, based upon familiarity with the facts? Are you including people who are not fully aware of the facts (hence, they do not have an actual opinion, but rather, a bias)? Or is this something that you either assume to be true, or are just making up? I ask these questions as someone who is very familiar with the sport of boxing, and its participants ..... and as someone who will be hanging out with Teddy on Friday.

(1,203 posts)Always so convenient how these ultra religious people always zero in on that one in Leviticus. There is a whole laundry list of "abominations" in Leviticus, but that is always the one that people can't let go.
Maybe it's because the thought of two men together makes straight guy's feel "gross" and "icky". They're so into women they cannot understand how not every other male on the planet doesn't feel like they do.
It makes me think of "the talk" I had with my parents when I was 19 and mom read my mail and found out I was gay. My dad said to me, totally incredulously. "If a beautiful woman walked in here totally nude right now, you wouldn't get turned on?" I just looked at my dad and said, "Dad, do you know what gay means?"
And, imagine that, the boxer (who I never heard of, not into sports, don't follow them at all) "may" be stepping out on his wife.
Color me shocked.

(73,525 posts)I've never liked Manny Pacquiao. But I recognized that he was a good fighter. I was impressed when he moved up in weight, until it was confirmed that he was using steriods et al.
Still, I respected the fact that he became involved in politics, to advocate for the poor people of his nation. In that arena, he appeared to be a good man, doing the right thing for the right reasons.
This, in my opinion, is a worse "sin" than the juicing. It increases anticipation of his finally fighting the best pound-for-pound boxer of this era, Floyd Mayweather. In my opinion, Floyd will TKO Manny somewhere around the tenth.
I should add that former champions Greg Haugen and Roberto Duran have an intense dislike of PacMan. Both think that Floyd will KO Manny in 4 or 5 rounds. (DU sports forum readers will recall my interview with Greg from last fall.)

Manny Pacquiao has flatly denied he ever quoted the book of Leviticus from the Bible which condemned gays and said they should be killed for which some segments of the US media have taken him to task ...
In a telephone conversation with ABS-CBNS Dyan Castillejo, Pacquiao said I dont even know that verse from Leviticus because I never read Leviticus.
Pacquiao whose comments were in a response to a question on his reaction to US President Barack Obamas support for gay marriages said my opinion is that same sex marriages are against the law of God.
He added that the reporter identified as a certain Granville Ampong did not even ask me for a verse from the Bible. But if he did I would have given him 1st Corinthians 6 which lists activities (including homosexuality) that will prevent people from entering the Kingdom of God. ...

(118,270 posts)A gross misquote gets out of hand -- but the iconic boxer still has a long way to go on the sensitivity front

... Gods words first obey Gods law first before considering the laws of man, Pacquiao told Ampong, in what the writer described as an exclusive interview. Pacquiao was further quoted explaining that God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old.
OK, its generally accepted that invoking Sodom and Gomorrah in general and Sodom and Gomorrah of Old, in particular is not going to win anybody a seat at the GLAAD awards ... Pacquiaos statements quickly set off a chain of angry and just plain disappointed responses from across the Net, where Pacquiao has been celebrated as a Filipino icon, and beloved for his humanitarian works. On Tuesday evening, the Los Angeles shopping center the Grove, where Pacquiao was to be interviewed for Extra, called off the event ...
Its a relatively free country, which means that the Catholic Pacquiao is welcome to express his views, even views many of us find backward and exclusionary. In return, a business like a shopping mall may choose to decline his patronage. What is not OK is what happened along the way ...
