2. Why was she taken into custody
Sat Jun 27, 2015, 11:58 AM
Jun 2015

The police in most places don't physically arrest people for these petty misdemeanors. They usually say, "You're under arrest," put the handcuffs on while they write a citation, then take off the cuffs and release the "perpetrator." I was a night watchman for campus housing, and this is what the police did whenever someone broke into one of vacant units to take a shower and camp out. Even if they did some physical damage to the apartment when breaking in, the police would not actual haul the off to jail. They issued them a summons to appear in court to answer charges of trespassing and vandalism, then let them go.

8. Charged with "Defacing a monument"

We will see how far that charge goes given the events of the past couple of weeks, and given the governor's expressed intent that the flag should be taken down.

If this happened before the church shooting, I would not have been surprised to read that she was shot while climbing the flagpole.

She is lucky to be only jailed.

I am very glad that she is getting public support to help her with her legal problems. It would be better of course if she had no legal problem to begin with because the flag hadn't been there to take down. But, this I will take this.

Satyagraha

And being arrested only adds to the act, because it's part of the "theater" (I don't mean that in a derogatory way)

As long as she wasn't abused in any way and gets out on bail.... it's all part of the scenario.

That's why it takes courage.

Eddy took the flag down twice

(Columbia-AP) Jan. 31, 2005- The man who once climbed a flagpole on State House grounds and burned the Confederate flag has died.
<snip>

Eddy called himself the Reverend E.X. Slave, frequently walking alone around the State House in chains or with a ladder with protest signs in his fight against the Confederate flag.

He used that ladder in his most famous protest, climbing the pole in front of the State House in April of 2002 while wearing a black Santa suit and burning the flag.

He was arrested and banned from the capitol grounds after pleading guilty to defacing a public monument.

Judge James C. Williams suspended Eddy's two-year prison sentence to two years of probation on the condition Eddy stay away from State House grounds while on probation. The appeals court said security officers requested the restriction because Eddy previously had handcuffed himself to a monument on the grounds.

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels…upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!"
