The Carlton County Sheriffs Office says 48-year-old Brett Arthur Berry was at Black Bear Casino on June 14 for a canine training and certification event.
Deputies were called to the casino just before 3 a.m. on June 15 on a report of animal cruelty caught on camera involving Berry, who had been asked to leave the casinos Cobalt Lounge earlier in the night by deputies due to staff complaints.
Berry was observed on camera leaving the lounge, going back to his hotel room and then leaving with his K-9 partner five minutes later. He was then observed carrying the dog to his car while being visibly upset.
The accused was next seen on camera picking up the dog by the collar and throwing it to the ground. The K-9 then ran back to the casino and got trapped between entryway doors. Berry was seen catching up to his partner, and then repeatedly hitting the K-9.
The Ramsey County Sheriffs Office released a written statement Friday, saying they are troubled by the allegations.
Deputy Berry was sent home from the K-9 trials and placed on administrative leave, the sheriffs office said. The K-9 was evaluated by a veterinarian and no injuries were found. The K-9 partner is currently in the care of others.
Berry was arrested and has been charged with two misdemeanor counts: one for assaulting a public safety dog and one for animal cruelty.
____ video at link below. Warning he is really smacking the dog around.

(14,896 posts)on this site several times that I don't
think police should have dogs or horses.
We know how they treat humans.
We know how they treat the dogs of 'suspects'.
Police are very untrustworthy.
They have earned my distrust.

(39,215 posts)a lot of the problems that we see in cities. Everyone knows each other here and the police live in our community. We also have a strong animal rights group that will not let this get pushed under the rug.
Not too long ago my grandson and I were talking about our police force here and he reminded me that it only takes one. He was right - this is the one.

(9,126 posts)I always say that anyone who hurts an animal is a very dangerous person, especially to children and vulnerable people. I hope he does not have any children and if he does, CPS should investigate. If he takes his anger out on his "partner" imagine what he would do with his gun. Sick person. Ugh.

(39,215 posts)not enough. I will use some of your reasoning.

The FBI now tracks animal cruelty because it is such a good predictor of future violence:

I hope they throw the book at that guy because many officers believe that K9s are fellow officers and harming one is now considered a federal offense

I hope your community comes together and demands he be stripped of his gun and badge because he is a ticking time bomb.

(38,206 posts)a misdemeanor? It should be a felony with multiple year minimum sentences.
All a person has to do is blow in a cop's face and get charged with assaulting a cop. The K-9s should be protected just as much, especially since they are MUCH less likely to shoot unarmed black kids.

(14,910 posts)I hope this asshole is sent packing and never works another day as a law enforcement officer.
The video is horrible.
Repeatedly, the officer smacks the dog while the K9 is up against a door, unable to escape the assault.
That this officer is only facing misdemeanor charges infuriates me!
The video at the link (which needs to be added to the OP) http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2015/06/26/sheriff-ramsey-county-deputy-caught-on-camera-abusing-dog/ -states that the officer was asked to leave the premises by hotel staff just prior and just after the assault occurred.
It was 3 a.m. and he had left the Cobalt Lounge, errr; BAR so it's evident to me that the officer involved in the attack was most likely intoxicated at the time of the assault on his K9 partner.
This guy has needs a heavy dose of karma shoved right up his ass...
