Re thick-skinned people: Fearlessness lets them do some crappy things. I think they contribute daring and courage which are important. But thin-skinned people behave better in the world

BTW: in my short time at DU, I've seen the young Palin woman eviscerated for having sex; seen Christians jeered at as nastily as the Islam screed above (which has a grain of merit at least - there is no Christian ISIS lopping heads), and seen many of us tolerant crusaders against bigotry excoriate and condemn about eighty percent of the US population: all Republicans, all southerners, all cops, all people with money, all Zionists...

Sex is a normal human urge. She is a person dealing with the same personal struggles, sadness, etc as any other person. Her sex life has harmed no one - she's not like a pastor who calls for charitable donations then steals from the collection plate.
And if she were male, it is doubtful her sex life would be so shocking; nor would she carry the Brand Of Sluttiness (pregnancy) that puts her sexual choices out in public. (This has a vicious real-world application. Afghanistan and similar places, a pregnant single woman frequently gets murdered for her immorality; her rapist or sex partner denies everything and goes unpunished).
Basically: it's misogyny, prudish titillation, and delight over a woman's personal hard time. Giving the strong impression that many here are as nasty, illiberal and finger-pointy as the much-caricatured 'right-wing haters.'

(66,648 posts)She's not a private citizen living a life that's none of our business. She has made a living off of telling people how they should run their sex lives, specifically instructing them to wait until marriage before having a sex life.
For her to continue in that role after twice becoming pregnant while umarried means that she's a shameless hypocrite. It's not slut-shaming, and it's not misogyny. It's calling out a hypocrit, and it's entirely valid.
Male hypocrites are routinely called out for their hypocrisy, by the way. Anti-gay crusaders who are discovered to be gay, for instance. Anti-drug zealots who get arrested while high with a bag of coke in their pocket, for instance. Aggressive, bible-beating moralizers who run up multi-million dollar gambling debts, for instance.
Calling it slut-shaming misogyny is an attempt to exonerate her for her hypocrisy, which is the real issue. Most of us don't care if she has sex with 1,000 people, as long as she doesn't get a paycheck for telling that we have to abstain.

One of the many people who 'liked' the page on Facebook noticed his face on the widget and freaked. He then demanded we take it off as he didn't give us permission to use his face. You'd think telling him to simply 'unlike' the page would suffice, right? Wrong! He felt he shouldn't have put up any effort to have his face removed and went so far as to tell us to take the website offline or he'd sue.

(105,514 posts)sports threads apart from the major news events (which a final result would be, but not a score 15 minutes in), they might be annoyed to find a score posted in a thread about leaving DU. Such a person would have been trying to avoid spoilers, but have it come up in front of them nevertheless, in an unexpected place.
Plus, a football score looks completely off-topic in this thread. It's a shame you have to resort to calling DUers 'children' because you have a different viewpoint.

(154,021 posts)from the site owner. He could not be clearer, and I am far from a fan of the site owner, but he is right on that one, very much so.
As is, we were celebrating every major event of that non important game on Facebook. None does that shit here anymore because of some folks who are sour folks. If you do not want spoilers, stay off social media and go underground. Yesterday's non game was broadcasted in Spanish on Telemundo, and in English on Fox.
As I said, I noticed here none was posting threads about it.
Come the Olympics, I intend to stay off DU for those non events as well. I know my friends on FB, who I know in person, the few who are into that, will celebrate.
By the way, notice I have not even mentioned who played. I am afraid somebody will alert even at this late hour. Those were bullshit hides, but makes DU far less of what it used to be.
I just watch as it continues to diminish. It is kind of fun, actually. But hey, if those are the "community standards" who am I to say? By the way, none alerted on the person doing the spoiler...piggies and Orwell come to mind. But I neither alert or play jury. That makes the place suck even more.

I don't need nails for anything. I just pointed out that alerting on the person who started this conversation, likely should have been done by somebody in the my god I don't want no spoilers on this site!!!! Crowd, that mass alerted on me when I did that during the World Cup. Look on the bright side, the number of things I don't post here keeps growing.
And once the southern strategy goes live against Sanders, I am gone. You will not see a post, I will simply leave, like the last time antisemitism became all the rage. Came back as a promise to spread a story. That promise has been kept, and The issue partially resolved.

Yes, I do need some reading comprehension here, because I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about now. You said you posted somewhere else yesterday, and I said, using heavy sarcasm, that I (and, I imagine, the whole of DU) don't care that you did something somewhere else, and there's no interest in you telling us that you did. Now you appear to be asking for praise for being able to use the internet 2 minutes after a match ended. Who cares?
Yes, you really do seem pissed off that no-one alerted on a post that you yourself don't think should be hidden. This seems to be because you still hold a grudge from a year ago, and you want other people to have to go through what you think was unjust.

I am not pissed, just amused, since I know the person who started this conversation does things like that and gets away with them, regularly. It is being observant of the evolution of the community standards into a version of Orwell's Animal Farm. It is just a fascinating sociological observation.
If I were a few decades younger and thinking of a thesis...it could be a worthy one to pursue.
As of now...it is just funny...if you are certain people, bullying is ok, bullshit alerts are ok, but some are indeed protected. It has made the place far less than it used to be.
It is also part of the partisan infection that has made DC dysfunctional (I am being kind) and next are state houses.
But as I said, once the antisemitism starts with Sanders, we expect it, I am gone.

(154,021 posts)The US Soccer Team won something minor tonight. After I got three hides from posting during a LIVE EVENT (ironically men's world cup related), see my sig... no interest in reveling here.
And it is due to the bullies.
Just posted the story though... and I used one of Tom's excellent fire works photos from last night. How fitting, on the 4th of July.
I will not even participate in the proper threads that were started two seconds after that minor event in sports, because I expect to be alerted and have a post hidden. Cause of the bully behavior there is a lot I simply do not post here on anymore. Today I said that media referring to these women as girls was demeaning. After removing the post, I know that I can add faux populist and faux feminist to my list of rants on many people here. They complaint about a word, without end, or a shitty novel, but are fine with those behaviors from media.

(154,021 posts)they are part of the problem. Granted, I still think the Rs are far more part of the problem than the Ds, but none is innocent and it has led to a dysfunctional government and a crisis like we have not seen in the past. The more I read into it, the clearer that becomes.

People can talk about bullying all they want, but it's a pretty low person who targets a Down Syndrome child. I hate Sarah Palin as much as anybody, but that little boy didn't ask to get born into that horrid family. He's innocent.

If you can't get past the contemplation you make come back and get hidden posts again if your attitude is the same

(66,648 posts)Other than walks and trips to the park, we'd seldom taken her off of our property, so we had no idea where she'd gone or if she'd return. Stupidly, we also didn't give her a collar or tags, so there was no way for anyone to identify her as ours.
Luckily she found her own way home after about six hours, with muddy paws and covered with burrs. She seemed delighted with herself, but in one afternoon's adventure she'd satisfied her curiosity and never tried to get loose again.
That was a nice memory.
