West Virginia Man Caught Living With Deer in His House for a Year

The deer will not be commenting.

West Virginia Natural Resources Police

West Virginia police nabbed this blurry-faced man recently because the local fuzz were tipped off that he had been keeping live deer in his home for more than a year. You are not allowed to keep a deer in your home for more than a year, or any amount of time, apparently. It’s against the law. It seems like you wouldn’t need a law to tell you how not to keep a deer in your house, but America’s a funny place sometimes. We like to push the envelope.

Let’s try to set aside the absurdity of the picture for a moment and concentrate on the facts of the case. You can have a caption contest with your friends on your own time. When police officers arrived at the man’s West Virginia home, they saw a deer standing in the middle of the house, according to the Washington Post. The man knew how this looked. “While [the officers] were interviewing the subject, they could hear the commotion in the back part of the house, and the man tried to explain it away as a dog,” a police spokesman told the Post. “He finally confessed it was a second buck.”

The spokesman said the inside of the house was covered in straw, soaked in urine, and blanketed in feces. Deer ownership is not as glamorous as it seems. The deer, which the man had raised since they were fawns thinking they were injured, were released back into the wild and the man was charged with two misdemeanors that carry a fine and possible jail time.

If they had been raised from fawns in that house, it seems to me that they'd be sorely lacking in skills needed to survive in the wilds. Doubtful they'd survive hunting season if they managed to not starve before then.

nothing to do with them living in the house. Often a fawn will be rescued after its mother has been killed by hunters. The DNR has designated shelter that can take care of the fawns until they are old enough to be let go into the woods again. But individuals are discouraged from doing it on their own.

These two deer are no doubt too familiar with people and have no preservation skills. They needed to be put in a petting zoo somewhere.

Poor thing. I hope they're going to be able to survive their first season the the wild. The one in the pic looks like it would be weak and subject to either getting his butt handed to him by a bigger deer, or the first hunter who sees a buck walking up to him.

certainly more of a pet than a restrained wild animal. At most, I could see them saying he needed to provide an outdoor shelter, but a fine and perhaps a prison term for this IMO is outrageous. Looking at the area, it seems rural, not in the middle of some prissy neighborhood.

not allowed to have a deer in my house? Isn't that my business? As long as I am caring for it. Deer poop is a lot less objectionable than dog poop, and DAMN less objectionable than cat poop. Not that any poop should be in the house, but it does get there sometimes where you have animals. I fail to see the problem.

Bruce was a taxidermist and owned a mountain in the Berkshires. During season every year she wore a red ribbon around her neck and everyone knew not to shoot her. She was free to come and go, and as the years went by she spent less time around his house.

As evidenced by the video in this case the deer were not captives. It is no surprise that many cannot believe what the man says but I've seen it and I believe him.
