When "Christians" use the Bible to attack same sex marriage

they always quote from the Old Testament. But Christians derive their faith from the New Testament, and there is no mention of ssm by Christ. Whenever I see these folks, as I did yesterday on Tweety, I wish someone would ask them about that.

They never mention that Paul was also wrong on the issue of slavery.

out from either the OT or NT to "proof text" their arguments. In doing so, they ignore multiple references that destroy their arguments. The Bible, overall, is useful for supporting almost any position you may hold. There's something for everyone in there, somewhere.

The funny thing is that a lot of "proof texting" is done by people who have not even read the Bible. They hear these "proof texts" on Sundays and in their Bible study classes and repeat them blindly, without any further information.

Leviticus is full of nasty penalties for various activities done by most people, including the people quoting from it. Paul's letters, another popular source for bigots, also contains passages that contradict each other.

What you won't ever find is anything supposedly spoken by Jesus against those things. It wasn't his bag, apparently. Very rarely do "proof texters" quote the person their religion is named for. Very funny, that.

Matthew 22:21

15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.

16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.

17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a] to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?

19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius,

20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

I'll be serving this summer on a committee for our denomination, and this is going to be a hot, hot, hot topic. Again. Right now, I'm going to wait for quotation of the clobber verses from Leviticus and the oblique verse from Romans, and I'm thinking that my response will be, "Yes, I'm aware of those verses and thank you for pointing them out (yet) again. However, I disagree with you on their context, their understanding of human sexuality, and their relevance for what we know now. I also disagree with your interpretation that ranks these isolated verses so highly in your theology. So, what else do you have?"

Maybe I should start quoting Greek mythology to those Christian freaks to show that homosexuality is ok.
