To those of you who fly it: You fly it under the word heritage. You fly it to honor the dead. You fly it out of stubbornness. You fly it for as many different reasons you can make up. But you're really flying it for what it has come to mean today.
Its meaning today, was established once and for all in the middle of the 20th century. It was dredged up and flown as a symbol of segregation, bigotry and hatred. It a symbol of George Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door. Its a symbol of Lester Mattix handing out axe handles. Its a symbol of every KKKer who keeps his sheet nearby. Its a symbol of Bull Connor and his fire hoses and dogs. Its the symbol of Southern resistance to equality, decency and humanity.
Yeah, Im talking about THAT flag. The stars and bars. Most states are now running from it. But many bigots have embraced it more than ever.
My guess is that it will still be around for another decade or two. It will be displayed on bumper stickers. It will be a mainstay of graffiti. It will be flown on the lawns of old, clueless people. It will be flown at parades to get in the faces of black people and those called n****r lovers. It will be flown as a symbol of defiance against progress. But over the years, it will become something to be scorned, and those who hold onto it will be seen as fools and throwbacks. It will become a hated symbol of a past, ugly era.
Many of us may see it finally disappear in our lifetimes. But eventually, as Obama suggested, it will only be seen in museums.
