Kentucky man buys out entire Kmart, donates it all to charity

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/17/rankin-paynter-greatest-person_n_1523818.html

When Rankin Paynter learned that the Kmart in his Kentucky town was closing, he decided to buy everything that remained on the store's shelves -- and give it all away.

Four cash registers and six-and-a-half hours after his shopping spree began, the benevolent businessman walked away with $200,000 worth of inventory and gave it all over to Clark County Community Services, a nonprofit that helps families in Winchester, Ky., facing crisis situations, WLEX reports.

"It's time to give back," the "Summer Santa" told the news source.

Charity given willingly is better than taxes. I say it's just selectively helping who you want and telling everyone else to fuck off.

it's hard to combat but you are absolutely right. It's really the same thing with all the charitable organizations. It just keeps propping up the capitalism yet it's hard for folks to see giving as a negative. But you are absolutely correct.

But until the day comes that we really take care of our people in a fair and just manner, these donations are so necessary.

My mom volunteers at her local food pantry. She says there are so many more people needing help and alot less donations coming in.

...gold, silver, jewelery, etc. (Not a pawn shop, according to the website http://www.rankinpaynterbuyingcenter.com/) (right name and location for the man in the article)

What's depressing is that his business is the sort that is successful when people are selling off possessions to stay afloat. He's certainly in a position to know how badly people in his area need some help.

(note: I'm not speculating on the man one way or another, just bummed by the nature of what sort of business was in a position to help out. But then, if things were going better there, odds are the K-Mart wouldn't be closing in the first place)

Years ago I saw a photo of scrawny, little boys in Darfur. They were searching the ground for ants to eat. That photo has stayed with me all this time & whenever I see shit like Million Dollar Rooms, I wonder how someone can spend over a million dollars on a room while some where on this planet little boys are searching for ants to eat.

Oh & the awe the TV hosts have for this gross excess is almost as nauseating.
