Which for climate change is kinda weird, since they don't think it's a disaster in the first place.

But anyhow, it's the same movie-script mentality that dictates that politics is just a game to be won -- like football! -- and that good guys with guns are automatically transformed into Rambo.

The weird notion that there's a technological solution to every problem. But hey, hoping for a technological solution is a whole lot easier than than actually doing something.

The Republicans don't want to spend money on these things and don't want to use the technologies already handed to them.

Hell, we could simply stop burning down rain forests for sugarcane and palm oil plantations, but then where would wealthy American capitalists purchase slightly cheaper products from?

What we don't have are cheap technological solutions to this problem.

We can literally extract the CO2 from the atmosphere. It would take enormous amounts of power, and enormous amounts of space to store the CO2.

That makes it rather impractical, and unlikely to be rolled out unless the situation has already become dire.

Even if we could magically stop all CO2 emissions this second, we will be having large-scale climate change. Trees and other plants would take hundreds of years to fix enough carbon to get back down to pre-industrial levels.

And I'm not sure we have to move the entire Earth's economy to zero carbon emissions. The very least we can do is slow the problem. Just because climate change is already happening doesn't mean we can't make it even worse.

There's a lot of things humans can do to ameliorate the effects. Use natural gas as a bridge fuel to full-scale solar, wind, wave, geothermal, and nuclear power. Raise gas taxes and use the extra money for cost- and carbon-efficient mass transit. Keep raising fuel efficiency standards and stop burning coal as fast as is feasible. Methane abatement and energy generation on municipal dumps (widespread).

It takes time to put out a house fire, but that doesn't mean we get to say "fuck it" and break out the marshmallows.
