Billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson, once the primary source of funding for the now-defunct presidential campaign of former Speaker of the House Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA), is now a major financial backer of embattled Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) in his fight to keep his seat in a recall election against former Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, according to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)’s website.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that as of the end of April, Adelson had donated a total of $250,000 to the effort to keep Walker in office. Adelson and his wife contributed more than $17.5 million to the campaign of Newt Gingrich, who dropped out of the race on May 2.

As of May 1, Walker had raised a total of $13 million, putting him on a par with some Republican presidential candidates. Mother Jones reported that a quirk in Wisconsin election law regarding recalls allows officials like Walker who are targeted by a recall to rake in unlimited sums of money. Democrats were forced to adhere to normal campaign finance rules, which cap donations to gubernatorial candidates at $10,000.

Currently, Walker is six points ahead of Barrett, his Democratic challenger, in a poll cited by ABC News, 50-44. Voting in Wisconsin’s recall election takes place June 5.
