Rush Limbaugh: Donna Summer was 'right-winger' and 'not a fan' of rap

The conservative talk show host began his tribute to the disco icon, who died of cancer Thursday at the age of 63, by playing some of her music, then later providing his own personal take on her life and work.

“I met Donna Summer one time and her husband on an airplane. She and her husband, after the flight took off, came up to me and introduced themselves, and we had a nice conversation,” Limbaugh recalled. “They were one of us. They were. That's what they wanted to come tell me.”

Further elaborating on Summer’s apparently similar mindset, the radio figure added, “She came to hate the smut on the radio. She was not a fan of rap music at all.”

Summer became a born-again Christian in 1979, and even refused to perform one of her biggest hits, "Love to Love You Baby," which includes sexual moans. But according to People magazine, she changed her mind and recorded the song for a fragrance ad in 2011, complete with moans.

As far as Summer's opinion of rap and hip-hop, her nephew is the hip hop artist O’Mega Red, and in April, she was featured on a track with him. Red, who is also a record producer and actor, is a two-time recipient of the New England Urban Music Awards Rap Artist of the Year, and has spoken about his famous familial connection in the past.

Whatever her politics (and I seriously doubt Rush knows), my friends in the gay community were in mourning yesterday.

But I don't think that makes her a soul sister to a big fat pimple assed Dough Boy...

Donna Summer had had a Christian upbringing and was an unlikely writer of such a sexual song. She told Time magazine December 1975 that to write the lyrics, "I let go long enough to show all the things I've been told since childhood to keep secret." She added in an interview with the Telegraph Magazine: "So I took on this character and eventually it just fitted me."

Donna had a hard time listening back to the song after she recorded it and was concerned about what the song did to her image, but she learned to embrace it and made it a centerpiece of her subsequent tour, putting on a stage show that Madonna would later crib from, complete with dancers simulating sexual positions and Summer squatting over an array of guys.

However, she denied that she had ever made any such comment and, in a letter to the AIDS campaign group ACT UP in 1989, she said that it was "a terrible misunderstanding. I was unknowingly protected by those around me from the bad press and hate letters... If I have caused you pain, forgive me." She went on to apologize for the delay in refuting the rumours and closed her letter with Bible quotes (from Chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians)

She goes on to say in a later interview
"A couple of the people I write with are gay, and they have been ever since I met them. What people want to do with their bodies is their personal preferenc

She said many awful things later in life. The mourning was in spite of all of that, and was in part for an era many hold dear....

I'm a jazz, blues, and classical freak. But that doesn't mean I lean to the right.

Why does Limbo have to make everything about us and them and hatred for those who are not "one of us"? I will celebrate, if I'm still alive, the day the hog is put in his grave.
