Oklahomans were not happy to discover this week that Gov. Mary Fallin's (R) daughter has been living in a trailer on the grounds of the governor's mansion for months.
Is it true that Mary Fallins daughter is living in a trailer on the Governors mansion property?" one concerned resident wrote local TV station KFOR. "That is state property! Who is paying her bills? Oklahoma taxpayers?
The governor's office told KFOR that Christina Fallin, 28, has been living in an RV on the property since April. The trailer was hooked up to the governor's mansion for utilities, according to the news station.
Mary Fallin herself appeared Tuesday on KFOR to explain her daughter's living situation. She said she had directed her staff to look into whether having the trailer on mansion grounds violated any codes. It turned out that the Capitol Medical Center Improvement Zoning Commission forbids having a trailer on state property in an area that includes the governors mansion, according to KFOR.

(52,155 posts)I would have to think a mansion would have the room.

(52,155 posts)as did Truman's mother in law. I don't have a problem with any of them living in those places. There are many 28 year olds who need help who am I to care about that.

(20,176 posts)It doesn't cost US taxpayers even one red cent, the President pays her living expenses out of his own pocket.

(52,155 posts)as I would be with OK paying Fallon's daughter's.

(62,269 posts)Her taxpayer expenses would be in electricity and water consumption, potentially food consumption.

(20,176 posts)I only know it because it was one of those things Rushbots got their guts in a twist about...we're talking all the way back in the first term...and something was written about it at the time.

(62,269 posts)She probably got the setup for her own privacy and goings and comings and it worked. Until it was found out.
I frankly don't give a crap as long as the electrical / water usage is accounted and paid for.
I had a similar comment to yours, no one would care had she been an actual resident, and she'd be using similar amounts of resources (paid for by taxpayers).

Know a number o families back in the day in more rural areas with easier zoning who would do this
Worked out well enuf

(4,373 posts)Not so much when the house is owned by the state, zoning laws prohibit it, and taxpayers are paying for all of the trailer's utilities.

(62,269 posts)...if the utilities were accounted for and paid for by the family.
If she moved in the mansion and slept on an air mattress or couch or something in a separate room no one would give a shit. Yet she'd be using taxpayer funds like any other family member would in that situation.
So the trade for having her own personal space would be to pay for the resources it consumes.
That it is in some no-zoning area is definitely circumspect, but I don't have a problem with it, really. It's not that big of a deal.
