State by state, speak your mind about: Louisiana

I was born and raised in Louisiana. A hunter's paradise, they say (yuk), but the natural landscape in large part is beautiful, because there aren't a lot of big cities, so there is less concrete. Lush green. Rains a lot. Subtropical climate. Huge mosquitos. Fields of rice and sugar cane. Lots of tiny towns and rural residents. Great food, but you gotta limit the dishes with high fat.

Fresh figs galore. Pecan trees galore. Citrus. Fresh fish. Crabs. Shrimp. Fried chicken. Fried catfish. Gumbo, and more gumbo (yum). Cracklings. Sausage. Boudin. Crawfish. Azaleas, magnolia trees, satsuma bushes.

Politically dark red. Bad economy. I wouldn't move there, if I were a minority. A lot of people spend their entire lives there, never leaving. The southwest section is cajun country (where I'm from). New Orleans is totally different from anywhere else. Baton Rouge is a more cosmopolitan city, and more like one you'd find in other states.

place in the USA. Cried nonstop during the 24/7 coverage of Katrina (I was living in another state at the time). The relocated natives I know long to return but there is no place for them any longer.

It's a great place to eat and do a little drinking, too. A lot about LA has changed for the worse since Katrina, Rita, and Jindal. It's going to take some time, but I think LA will eventually bounce back. Most of the people in LA are caring and fun-loving. America is a richer place because of them.

(i'm from Illinois), New Orleans--the food, the music, the shopping--is a wonderful ciity. I was very sad when Katrina and the Federal Flood hit.
