DETROIT -- The golden age of the muscle car is now.
Despite strict emissions limits, concerns about climate change and unpredictable gasoline prices that would make a '60s hot rodder pull over and weep, Detroit''s modern performance cars could run rings around the classics. And they're surprisingly affordable when compared with price tags of some exotic cars with similarly high-performing engines.
"Back in the 1960s and '70s, we were looking at 300-, 325-horsepower engines. Now you've got 500-, 600-, even 700-horsepower," said Ken Gross, an automotive historian, museum consultant and journalist. "Never in my lifetime did I think I'd see the day when I could drive a 700-horsepower street car."

Please tell me who needs a gas guzzling 500 horsepower automobile? Other than, you know, the obvious compensation issues.

(19,339 posts)Who needs any car, really?
I can't tell if this is really a frowny-face at new muscle cars, or a poor anti-gun analogy.

(114,615 posts)if their cars are overmuscled. And they try from time to time.
They're wrong.

(568 posts)The same technology that makes ICUs very fast and powerful can also give us very fuel-efficient cars, but we squandered it.
Bill Clinton dropped the ball on fuel economy standards and that ball was lost until Obama came into office.
Some of our cars, happily, can get 250 MPG, but not all of them.
They should tax these beasts.

(9,951 posts)Because I have a 64 Ford Galaxy with the 427 side oiler engine and 4 speed and when I register it every year, there is no mention of a gas guzzler tax on my renewal notice.
beaglelover
(4,466 posts)but if you get a manual (which would be absolutely awesome!) there is no gas guzzler tax.....go figure! There's quite a few new cars with GG taxes, but the chevy SS was the first to come to my mind because I really really like the idea of that car and wish more examples were available.....rear wheel drive American muscle sedan with a big old V8 under the hood! Yeah baby!!
PS - Cool car by the way. My husband just sold his 65 Pontiac convertible. Sad to see it go but it's going to a new owner in Norway.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)but not if you have a standard shift.
Here's a few pics of my Galaxy.

(9,951 posts)A lot of blood, sweat, tears went into this car, and, of course, lots of money.

(4,466 posts)You know, some of us enjoy the sport of driving and are car enthusiasts. It's fun as hell to drive the twisties in a high powered well handling automobile. I will never own a car with less than 6 cylinders and I'm not ashamed to admit that. And my penis is fine thank you very much.

(34,189 posts)GMC or Chevy half ton and three quarter ton trucks now only have 350 engines. My 1999 GMC Suburban has a 454 and the young men I know are jealous that this old lady has a truck with a bigger engine than they can buy!
Since my Suburban is mostly used for hauling stuff when it is used a big engine makes it work more efficiently. Hauling a 4000 pound horse trailer with four horses and a full load in the truck needs a big engine. Some of the newer model trucks don't have enough power to get any acceleration with a full load even if the chassis can handle the weight.
I thought maybe it was that manufacturers were no longer making the big engines but apparently not. They've just downsized the engines to make their small truck fleets gauge better for the EPA. To hell with what the people that need a truck for a working farm that can actually pull a load and not take ten miles to get up to speed!
I'm glad that my Suburban is the last truck I will ever need. Since we seldom need to use it anymore we can probably keep it another ten or more years without putting another hundred thousand miles on it - which would still be a lot fewer miles than we got our of our first Suburban.

(8,976 posts)Well-my brother has a 2015 mustang but only 315HP...but that's just the four cylinder and it does get 30mpg...other than certain freaks built for the "penis size contest" modern cars get damn good mpg and moreso if you consider the extra weight of modern required equipment and options...

(2,841 posts)Some people have hobbies and muscle cars is one of them. I'm pretty sure not every single person on the planet is going to drive one of these fast gas-guzzlers down the cul-de-sac anytime soon anyway. Jeez let people have fun.
