The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania survey

DOGhOUSE Quality of Life Study, from Penn Vet Clinical Trials
Clinical Trial

Dog ownership is highly prevalent with over 70 million dogs in the US and 37% of all US households owning a companion dog. Previous studies have shown that a variety of physical health benefits are associated with owning a dog, including increased physical activity, decreased blood pressure, and increased survival following cardiac surgery.

In contrast, relatively few studies have examined the effect of dog ownership on overall quality of life (or QoL) or have tried to balance the potentially positive aspects of ownership with more negative aspects, such as increased responsibility or damage to property or belongings.

Investigators at Penn Vet and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania are currently undertaking a research study to develop and validate a quality of life questionnaire specifically designed for this purpose. The new questionnaire called the DOG Owner qUality of life SurvEy (DOGhOUSE) concentrates on 10 different aspects of everyday life that researchers have identified as important between dogs and their owners.
The investigators are in the final stages of questionnaire development and hope that once this is completed, DOGhOUSE can be used in a variety of studies to help better understand the effect of dog ownership, intervention, and animal-assisted therapy on human quality of life.

Investigators are recruiting up to 300 dog owners to take the questionnaire and help finalize development of DOGhOUSE.

Participants will be asked to supply some general information about themselves, such as their birth year, zip code, and home environment, but no specific identifying information, such as their name or address will be collected.

We estimate it will take no more than 10 minutes to complete DOGhOUSE.

Eligibility:

Participants must own and live with a dog.
