Polygamy Prominent in GOP Presidential Hopeful Mitt Romney's Family Tree
While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.
Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.
Romney's great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.
Romney's great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she "used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow" over her own husband's multiple marriages.

(8,994 posts)Let us please back off of doing that to people.
Mitt Robme is responsible for what he did and what he endorses; and in that we already have GIGABYTES of proof that he's in no way suited to run this country.
We have no moral right to bust his chops over his ancestry. And every time he opens his mouth he shows that we also don't have any need to, either.

(8,556 posts)I've pointed out on here before that Obama's family connection to polygamy is actually one generation (and quite a few decades) more recent than Mitt's. You have to go back to Romney's great-grandparents to find polygamists, while you only have to go back to Obama's grandparents to find it.
And who gives a shit, really? Neither candidate is themselves a polygamist. I care about their policies. I don't give a damn what their ancestors did.

(44,173 posts)It isn't his fault what they did, nor does he live a polygamy lifestyle.
What I DO care about is if he shares the Neanderthal views of the Mormon church concerning gays, women, blacks and non-Mormons.

(3,585 posts)The Romneys are a part of the Mormon power structure.
Bishop Mitt, his father was a Bishop, an uncle was in line to become the holy Prophet but died, the original 12 disciples, it is extraordinary their role in the religion.
At no time was there a break in this relationship with the church, the Romneys as Mormon Royalty, is an unbroken line.
Remember that this entire Presidential run by Mitt was granted permission by the Prophet in 2005.
When Mitt becomes a God, he is no longer restricted in the number of wives he can have, after they die, all of the women here will be baptized Mormon, and may become his wives, according to what the Bishop believes and teaches.
