CCTV says gas or oil.
#Tianjin is a port city in northeastern China and the fourth largest city. Its unclear what caused the explosion.

(17,139 posts)Paraxylene (PX)
Paraxylene (PX) is a chemical essential to the process of manufacturing plastic bottles and polyester clothing which is dangerous if inhaled or if absorbed through skin, causing different degrees of damage to abdominal organs and the nervous system. China is the worlds largest PX producer and consumer as of 2010. Safety concerns over PX factories have prompted environmental protests in China.

(4,959 posts)I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I'm still confused about the connection to the link. As far as I've seen, the type of plant today's explosion is is not confirmed but maybe it is the same kind?

(296,118 posts)<snip>
Hundreds of people have been injured and at least seven killed after a series of devastating blasts sent a fireball hundreds of metres into the air at an industrial port in northern China.
A shipment of dangerous goods in a warehouse went up in flames shortly before midnight local time (0500 GMT), state media reported, causing explosions so strong that they shook homes on the other side of the city and sent flaming debris arching over nearby high-rise buildings.
Hundreds of injured people crowded into hospitals, arriving on foot and by car after emergency services were overwhelmed.
When the first explosion happened, it felt like a earthquake, said Chen Bingzhi, who lives about 4km from the explosion site. The whole building was shaking. I live on the fifth floor and all the windows are broken.

Does anyone speak Chinese here?

(17,139 posts)A few caught it at the beginning. In those, it is a very small fire on the horizon. People probably started taping but didn't expect the whole load they got. When it started, it was no big deal.

(12,647 posts)you can see a smaller fire, right before the explosion. That's probably what he was focused on first.

(2,161 posts)Seems pretty obvious that it blew up, whether it was the source of the explosion or one of the secondary explosions.
