(90,039 posts)SO badly trashed. He became an object of derision. It was awful and so undeserved. All you have to do is compare the two of them - Carter versus reagan.
What did each of them do after they left office?
Carter went around building houses for the homeless, activating Habitat for Humanity, putting that cause on the map, devoting himself further to the human rights campaign he started while in office, became an international voice for human rights and fair elections and helping those less fortunate. Put not only his money but his whole body where his mouth was. He and Rosalyn could be seen, in many places, up on ladders in their overalls, with hammers and nails, and other actual roll-up-yer-sleeves WORK.
reagan? FIRST thing he and nancy did after he left office was to fly to Japan for a lavish, luxurious first-class pre-arranged personal appearance that was going to pay him two million dollars for one speech. THAT'S what was on the reagan agenda. How to cash in. How big to cash in. And how FAST to cash in. Granted, he was moving into some rather advanced throes of Alzheimers but he was still able to get dressed up and go out and glad-hand the fans, and stand there at the podium and read cue cards and fake it well enough. That was about it as far as the mercenary part, though, because there weren't many of those big-ticket junkets for him after that, and soon enough he was settled in at home in Bel-Air, in his bathrobe, with his nurses, drooling most of the day.
But the point was unmistakeable and hard to ignore. When Jimmy Carter left office, he set about helping others. When reagan left office, he set about helping himself.
Kinda shows you the measure of the man, and rather clearly, too.

(9,426 posts)He was both, which are qualities the gop reviles. Jimmy Carter was a true gentleman in every way. Probable too decent for the office he held. President Obama is following in his footsteps, so he is disliked by the so-called right. Best wishes to Jimmy Carter, and Mrs. Carter who has taken this journey alongside him.

(39,900 posts)On October 14, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed H.R. 1337, which contained an amendment sponsored by Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) creating an exemption from taxation of beer brewed at home for personal or family use. This exemption went into effect on February 1, 1979, making homebrewing legal on a federal level in the U.S.

(54,274 posts)During his campaign he came to Birmingham, Alabama.
Miz t. and I and our five year old daughter went to hear him speak.
I remember that his speech brought me to tears.
About how we as a nation needed to care for our less fortunate, etc.
The man has genuine compassion.
After his speech we gathered outside and he came through the crowd.
I had put my daughter up on my shoulders so she could see over the crowd.
With no prompting from me she yelled "HI JIMMY!"
He made his way over to us and took her hand.
"Hi, honey."
She was very shy and clammed up.
I said "Good luck. I hope you win."
He shook my hand and thanked me.
It's a good memory to have.

Way I see it, America needs a president who's gonna somehow un-royally screw up the Middle East, do some serious cleaning up after you dropped your pants and took a steaming dump all over the fucking environment, andboom!restore dignity, honor, and all that shit to these United States.
See, I got solutions to all your problemsI got 'em right here in my big, hairy ballsack.

I also met him at a book signing a few years ago. He had to sign books so fast all I could say to him was " Hi President Carter!" and he said Hello but the line was going so fast he had to keep signing and signing. I heard there were over a thousand people there that night.
He did sign a report a young boy had done on presidents for school. I'm sure he will treasure that all his life.

I met President Carter several times as a teen and a young man. I worked with Habitat for Humanity several summers. And I got to have a wonderful long conversation with him when I was interviewing at Emory University. During the tour, we wound up in the Carter Library and he was there. It was such an inspiring event for me as a young man.
