HRC Tweet: How does your student loan debt make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less.
Hint HRC, a lot of people who are still paying off student loans are in their 30's 40's 50's and beyond. Instead of a flippant one off, how about you ask a substantial adult question on the subject and maybe we all can have an grown up conversation?
If this needs to go to Primaries, feel free to move.

(2,427 posts)It was my quick take on using DU emojis to try and convey the horseshit that is that tweet.

(14,733 posts)my housemate still has more student loan debt than I've got left on the mortgage. So it's definitely not just a millennials issue.

(14,620 posts)I know people who had to defer so long, their loans are like 4 and 5 times the original borrowed amount now.
Even on income-based repayment plans, which are helpful, the balance owed keeps increasing. At least after 30 years of that, the remaining balance is forgiven, but that's still a long time to have that sword hanging over one's head.

(80,708 posts)After all, those who can still remember Dylan plugging in at Newport Folk festival don't REALLY want to be reminded that the "kids" graduating High School this year were born the year The Notorious B.I.G. released "mo money mo problems".
Don't feel bad, my generation is hitting early middle age and they still think we're goatee and nose ring-wearing starbucks slackers who listen to "that Nirvana" all day.
You have one advantage on us, though, and that's sheer demographic size:

The Boomers may not realize it- or like it- but sooner or later they will need to take you seriously, which is one piece of respect we never got from them.

(538 posts)I'm A BOOMER! 80's Undergraduate loan & 2000 graduate loans = $28,664! Since 2007 I've paid $288 per month BUT still owe $45,033! Yes I had some deferments and forbearance (I was a single parent of two daughters) & have been making payments off & on since 1991,however, I'VE made every monthly payment since 2007 & NOTHING HAS GONE TOWARDS THE PRINCIPLE!
I CAN NEVER OWN A HOME or RETIRE, OR LEAVE ANYTHING FOR MY DAUGHTERS!

(53,413 posts)He didn't say the couldn't get into schools it was that they couldn't pay for them. And yes, for a minority with just a high school diploma the job market is likely pretty crappy.
