Transgender advocates have, for years, been calling for an end to what they label the "epidemic" of transphobic violence. And while every November 20, the community and its allies remember those lives lost on the international Transgender Day of Remembrance, 2015 has been a particularly deadly year for transgender women in the United States. In the first seven weeks of the year, seven trans women were killed in the U.S.
At press time, 17 transgender women have been murdered this year alone, most of them women of color with one additional victim whose gender identity has been disputed in press reports and among family members and activists. That exceeds the number of transgender women killed in the U.S. in all of 2014, though neither of these totals account for individuals whose deaths were not reported or investigated, nor for victims who were misgendered or not regarded as trans women in death.

(19,558 posts)At least not the ones I keep trying to engage in conversation. It makes them uncomfortable to deal with the horrors our society is capable of committing. Horrors which are only getting worse.
Thanks for posting this! We need to be talking about it and formulating ways to wake people up to what's taking place all around us.

(3,370 posts)This year, I was made aware of a branch of radical feminism that *hates* transgender people. A now former friend was very vocal with that hatred. One of the things she would harp on was the TERF belief that violence against transgender people is just a figment of the imagination and that murder figures are inflated.
It saddens me to see that these things happen in 2015. I'm not surprised, but I am sad.
Thank you for sharing this and bringing attention to this issue.

(53,936 posts)Transphobia is real and part of transphobia is the lack of interest in it or awareness of it. Many trans people live in fear of being discovered, and those who are "out" face all types of discrimination, much which is never discussed, even in the GLB community. These women are being murdered for finally being who they were meant to be. It has to stop.

(9,527 posts)It does make me wonder if there is a similar level of violence against those who transition to men. If not, does that suggest that the problem is some sort perceived threat against masculinity as these women are potentially seen as "rejecting" being male or if the guy is seen seen as being attracted to a transgender woman which could tie into events like the Matthew Shepard murder where one of the killers said they attacked Shepard in response to Shepard putting his hand on the guy's knee.
Either way it's disturbing the level of violence especially as this only covers murders and not other violence.

(6,036 posts)AFAIK the majority are trans women although there are cases like Brandon Teena where victims are trans men.
Not hard in our society to find hatred and violence directed at any guy who is deemed, not man enough.
